Hi Goldy,
I believe this is a Blue Whistling Thrush. I checked my "Birds of Northern India" guide by Richard Grimmett and Tim Inskipp.
Page 192, plate 74 has a good color painting very similar to this bird. It's listed as a local common resident in Uttarunchal.
The Asian Koel has a red iris, a lighter beak, and the dark Koel male does not have the spots this bird has. Your doubts were correct.
Thanks for the posting.

Hi Francine, I see the Finchs arrived at your place! Very nice image showing well the female colorations and form. I like the eye contact, open view on the larch branch as well as the off center composition you used. Interesting, almost mysterious, BG and it is well isolated. Well done, Tfs Richard

Hello Paul,
True we don't see many landscapes here on TN but that's all the more reason for you to keep posting them. You and your images have been an inspiration for me to pursue wide angle landscape photography. This image is gorgeous. I love the low POV and comp. with the foreground rock and water leading out to the wonderfully exposed and sharp sky/clouds. The golden foreground is realy fine. Great use of filters and capturing the moments beauty.
TFS, Richard
