Male Steenbok at the edge of Serwe Pan in the Khama Rhino Sanctuary.
One of the animals that survived the pressures of man and has flourished since the Sanctuary was formed and are commonly seen throughout the Sanctuary - especially along the edge of the pans.

Behaviour
Usually solitary or in pairs (both male and female defend their territory) these small antelope are the most widespread in Botswana - frequently seen even outside of protected areas. They are predominantly browsers (though they do dig for tubers and roots to get moisture) and their selective diet enables them to survive independently of water.

Identification
These antelope can be identified by their rufous brown upperparts, snowy white underparts, black scent glands by their eyes and their big ears. Only the rams have horns.

Predation
They are extremely fleet-footed but have to be as their are prey for all the big cats as well as Caracal. Their young are taken by Jackal, Smaller cats and Eagles.

The Khama Rhino Sanctuary
The 4,300 hectare Sanctuary was established in 1992 to facilitate the reintroduction of White Rhino into Botswana after poaching had left only a handful of Rhino's in the wild.

As well as White Rhino the KRS has numerous other animals including Giraffe, Burchell's Zebra and numerous Antelope - most of which were reintroduced to the area. Along with the animals that were brought in there are other more secretive animals which survived the encroachment and hunting pressures of man such as Kudu, Leopard, Brown Hyena and Caracal to name a few.

The campsites & chalets at Mokongwa Camp are in a beautiful setting under large Mokongwa trees and the surrounding bushveld attracts good birdlife to the campsites.

The Khama Rhino Sanctuary is well worth a visit if you are passing through on your way to the North of Botswana. Its relatively small size means that you can cover most areas of the Sanctuary in one day and due to the quantities of game it often proves more rewarding than game drives in the larger reserves.

This image has been cropped slightly - I used a beanbag to stabilise the lens.

Hi Philip

I am short on time tonight so just a quick visit. Nice shot and fully deserves the green smiley. :-)

Hi Philip;
Fantastic shot...with very clear details on the Steenbok and of course the flies on it back.
Meerkat

This photo stands out, it's clear, sharp, detailed, good colour and well composed. The flies add a nice touch...

Great capture Philip, you have her attention. Good sharpness and the flies on the back are a great bonus. It would be nice to see this as a bigger image if it was not a crop. Very well done.
