[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This image was taken on the Chobe River in Botswana. The Chobe forms part of the boundary between Botswana and Namibia. It starts up in the highlands of Angola, crosses through the Caprivi Strip of Namibia and then meanders along between the two countries for some way before flowing into the mighty Zambezi. It changes name several times along the way from the Quando, to Kwando, to Linyanti before Chobe. When the Zambezi is at high levels the water pushes back up the Chobe changing the direction of the flow.

The area of the Chobe just up river from Kasane is one of the best in the world for photographing Hippo, Elephant and birdlife. One has a choice of boat cruising or game drives. The sunsets are also remarkable. A number of quality lodges service the somewhat excessive visitor demand.

Hippo spend most of their days lounging around either in or near water. At night they leave the water and graze on terra firma and will at times travel great distances to do so. When encountering them it is always best to allow them space to move to deep water where they feel safest.

This shot was taken from a small boat from a rather short distance. The hippos were munching casually and at times there were egrets walking accross their backs. This particular individual played a bit of a cat and mouse game with us for a while but eventually his curiosity got the better of him and he presented this view.

Fantastic impact and the hippo does look as if it comes out of hiding. The hot spots on the right cheek is a bit distracting but I don't think I could have pulled this off as well as you did.

These are fascinating guys but it's often difficult to get a good shot... you succeeded admirably with this one. Great detail and composition. Good job!

Hi Rob, this is a great shot. I love the low angle view and the hipp with all the strands of vegetation looks great, even a little mischievous! The lighting is good although a little more on the nose/face would be even better, I suppose asking the hippo to turn around a bit is out of the question!

This photo is so cute, like a little child who thinks they are completely hidden behind a small tree just because they can't see you. I love the grass over his head, and the blurry background. The light reflecting off of his face is nice also, hard to imagine this adorable looking face can be such a dangerous creature. I would have been terrified being this close to him, well done.

Rec'd you message from my previous photos and I do get the message. I spend most of my time on TL and TE with bulk of pictures. Now if I could only see the hippo's teeth...Great photo and thanks
