Whitefaced Owl (or Southern Whitefaced Scops-Owl as its now called) photographed on a night drive in the Khama Rhino Sanctuary.

The 4,300 hectare Sanctuary was established in 1992 to facilitate the reintroduction of White Rhino into Botswana after poaching had left only a handful of Rhino's in the wild.

As well as White Rhino the KRS has numerous other animals including Giraffe, Burchell's Zebra and numerous Antelope - most of which were reintroduced to the area. Along with the animals that were brought in there are other more secretive animals, that can be seen, which survived the encroachment and hunting pressures of man such as Kudu, Leopard, Brown Hyena and Caracal to name a few.

The campsites & chalets at Mokongwa Camp are in a beautiful setting under large Mokongwa trees and the surrounding bushveld attracts good birdlife to the campsites.

The Khama Rhino Sanctuary is well worth a visit if you are passing through on your way to the North of Botswana. Its relatively small size means that you can cover most areas of the Sanctuary in one day and due to the quantities of game it often proves more rewarding than game drives in the larger reserves.

Another advantage of the KRS is that they offer night drives which gives you the chance to see the rarely seen nocturnal animals and birds of Botswana (as shown here).

This photo was taken using a bean bag for stability - I took 16 photos of this bird and got 2 that were decent!! That's one of the major advantages of digital - you can keep snapping away without a thought of extra developing costs!! :)

I set the ISO to 400 in order to increase my shutter speed whilst keeping noise as low as possible. I didnt use a flash - just relied on the spotlight, thus there was no red-eye to remove. The photo has been cropped and sharpened slightly...

Nice shot Philiph, I like better a little more of sharpness. What do you think?
Maurizio

Beautiful shot Philip. Understand the difficulty getting this shot on a night drive. I tried a workshop on your image .. might or might not be an improvement :)
TFS!!

Hi Phillip, excellent photo except for the focus being a little fuzzy. The eyes for one should always be in perfect focus. Everything else very good. Keep shootin!!
