[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The rat peeks wearily out of its burrow. It is nervous, knowing that it falls at the bottom-end of the Kalahari food chain. It dashes out briefly, looking for food and then seeing my movement bolts back to this hole.

Here it looks out again, guarding the entry to its safe haven. It seems to be weighing the threat of my presence against the need to eat.

After a long while and many trips down the hole, the rat decides I'm harmless enough and runs into the dunes to scavenge for food.

Hi Reinier,
Excellent shot! Good exposure in the bright light and limited shade. Colors and detail look great. DOF is excellent to show the rat and his surrounding environment. It is tough to be near the bottom of the food chain!

Very detailed shot of this cute fellow and its surroundings! I like very much when a picture in itself tells a whole story ! This one nicely depicts the context in which this animal is living, the large funnel-like entry to its haven, where it has to watch out for absence predators, and the thornbushes, also seeming to add some additional protection ! Thanks for sharing, Patrick
