[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Bateleur (Terathopius ecaudatus) is one of the more rare species of raptor in Southern Africa, although fairly common in the game reserves, mainly along a band stretching across the central and northern parts of southern Africa.
I found this one - who was inquisitive enough to look back at me when I was waiting for an approaching lion to photograph - near a waterhole in the Mabuasehube game reserve in the Kgalagadi region of Botswana.
Bateleurs have an unmistakable red face and coloured marks on the wings. It has a noticable short tail and its wings are long an kept at an angle when flying, very rarely clapping them as they prefer soaring.
