[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Black-Backed Jackal (Afrikaans name: Rooijakkals, meaning Red Jackal)) showed some interest in me on an early morning outing in the Central Kalahari of Botswana. This jackal is common in the whole of Southern Africa and outside of the national parks it is in a constant fight for survival against farmers who hunt them relentlessly as they kill sheep. However, they still survive and have shown that maybe they are the world's most adaptable creatures. In the wilderness they can hunt animals much heavier than themselves - the males weigh about 8 Kg, yet they challenge springbok weighing up to 40 Kg.
These jackals are nocturnal and diurnal and although mainly solitary they are often seen hunting in pairs of male and female.
Although hunter and scavenger (known to even steal at a lion kill) they are considered to be omnivorous, eating wild fruits and plants.
Their calls at night in the wilderness are probably one of the most well-known sounds of the bush and one can lie in your tent feeling one with nature as you listen to them long into the dark hours of the African night.

Very nice capture Nico. A much more difficult proposition this shooting in the wild. Great details and terrific eye contact. Well done!

Beautiful capture of this jackal, Nico. I like the POV with his frontal pose and the legs so straight. The light is warm and the details are spot on. Well done and TFS. : )

Excellent picture Nico!
Good thing to have the sun at your back for the advantage, since this Jackal is obviously checking you out ;-))
Amazing that they take on much larger animals alone or with a mate instead of a pack. Quite formidable!
I appreciate the informative note.
Thanks,
Dave

Sorry, no time for decent critique, but the two points are well deserved here.

Nico, great exposure and lighting. I like composition too.

The guy is staring at us - he doesn't seem to be afraid of what he sees.

Great post.

A good solid shot with really nice detail, just a bit bright, did a workshop, hope it helps.

I love these little creatures. Fortunately saw some in your beautiful country and in Namibia. I like the DOF but the POV/crop doesn't do it for me I'm afraid.Best wishes,
OWO
