A young Elephant crossing the Chobe river, photo taken on a boat cruise on the Chobe River...this Elephant was crossing over onto Sedudu Island late in the afternoon to feed on the papyrus grasses that grow on the island...

Sedudu Island is only a small island but it was the subject of an international dispute between Botswana and Namibia not so long ago. Namibia wanted it for farmland but Botswana recognised it was important ecologically. In the end Botswana won as the main channel of the river was deemed to pass on the Namibian side of the island leaving it within Botswana's borders!!

A highly recommended activity if you are anywhere near Kasane is to take one of these boat trips on the river - the sunset cruise is excellent. You are guaranteed good sightings of elephant, hippo and alot of antelope as they come down to drink. The elephant herds spend most of the day feeding away from the river but as it gets towards the afternoon they come down to the river to slake their thirst....

Unfortunately the river is beginning to get a bit overcrowded with boats at times though there are restrictions in place....it is not what Botswana is famous for (namely remote, unspoilt wilderness) but nevertheless it is well worth doing if you have the chance!

This photo has been cropped slightly and sharpened...I was able to use a tripod on the boat to stabilise the lens.

Hi Phil, interesting picture of a swimming elephant.
They seems so ugly but in the water they're really light-weight.
Thanks for posting again.
