[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
We were on our way to the Kwai river on the 23rd of December 2005 when this rare treasure appeared in front of us. Of course my father, brother and I immediately started snapping, and just as well, because our opportunity was brief and (s)he soon disappeared again. At least I managed to get thjis shot as well as a full body shot. It never did oblige me with some eye contact, or maybe I was just to slow.

According to "Wikipedia" this is a grassland antelope found in West, Central,East Africa and Southern Africa.

"Roan Antelope stand about a metre and half at the shoulder and weigh around 250 kilograms. Roan Antelope are a roan colour with a lighter underbelly, white eyebrows and cheeks and a black face, lighter in females. There is a short erect mane, a very light beard and prominent red nostrils. The horns are ringed and can reach a metre long in males, slightly shorter in females. They arch backwards slightly.
Roan Antelope are found in grasslands where they eat mid-length grass. They form harem groups of five to fifteen animals with a dominant male. Roan Antelope commonly fight among themselves for dominance of their herd, brandishing their horns while both animals are on their knees."

They are also found on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

"Numbers in the Kruger National
Park have declined from 450 in 1986, to 30 free ranging animals in 2002."

Thanks for looking and as always thank you for your advice.

Hi Francois

This is such an amazing animal and you managed to capture it showing its youthfulness and beauty and even with a bonus ox-pecker on its back.

I see you visited the Chobe in a time-warp machine (chuckle). According to your notes you took this photo on 23 December 2006 which is still 20 days into the future. Fortunately I realise it was just a typing error as the exif file reveals that it was actually on 23 December 2005.

I've just come back from the Kruger Park and was also fortunate to see 1 (only one) during my 18 days trip. It was a chance encounter as well and I only managed to shoot 1 record shot and then it was gone.

Your composition is fine, the cropping was well done, while the colours are rich and natural. The details are sharp and the BG is sufficiently OOF and evenly coloured to enhance the subject. The overall exposure is fine, but it is just a pity that the animal stood with its backside towards the sun which meant that its face was covered in shade. From your notes I gather that you did not have time to ask it to turn around and face the other way. It sure is tough being a nature photographer, isn’t it?

Good work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hello Francoise!
I like the color contrast between the bright and intense green of the background, and the browns of the Antelope.
We could apreciate a lot of details on the animal and their horns.
Regards,
JM

Hi Francois,
You did very well for only having a brief time to get a shot. This Roan Antelope looks excellent. A beautiful animal. I really like the ringed texture of the horns. Spot on exposure has excellent colors and detail in the animal. Well done!

This is so cool when things happen this way! You were lucky to see this beautiful animal in the wild like this. Despite the little time you had, you caught an excellent portrait of this beauty.
