I have been wanting to post a picture of Egypt, but most of my pictures of Egypt are historical subjects, but since there is a rivers section I decided to post this view across the Nile toward the Valley of the Kings from my hotel room in Luxor. This is a scanned slide taken with a Pentax SFX, 35 – 70 lense and Agfa 100asa slide film. I took this shot shortly after sunrise - you can see the mist rising in the distance.

Why the title? Rivers which flow through arid areas for a major part of their lower course, are described as 'exotic' - they would not be there if they were not deriving most of their water from wetter areas far away. The other well known example is the Colorado in the USA.

The Nile (Arabic: النيل, transliteration: an-nīl), is the major north-flowing river in Africa and is generally regarded as the longest river in the world (it is not the biggest [voloume] – the Amazon holds that title. The Nile has two major tributaries, the White Nile and Blue Nile, the latter being the source of most of the Nile's water and fertile soil, but the former being the longer of the two. The White Nile rises in the Great Lakes region of central Africa, with the most distant source in southern Rwanda, and flows north from there through Tanzania, Lake Victoria, Uganda and southern Sudan, while the Blue Nile starts at Lake Tana in Ethiopia, flowing into Sudan from the southeast. The two rivers meet near the Sudanese capital Khartoum.

The northern section of the river flows almost entirely through desert, from Sudan into Egypt, where the ancient civilization depended on the river. Herodotus, the great Greek historian wrote "Egypt is the gift of the River Nile" and this is still largely true. Most of the population of Egypt and all of its cities, with the exception of those near the coast, lie along those parts of the Nile valley north of Aswan; and nearly all the cultural and historical sites of Ancient Egypt are found along the banks of the river.

The Nile ends in a large delta that empties into the Mediterranean Sea.

Hello James,
I've only passed through Egypt along the Suez Canal many years ago as a child. In my mind's eye I have since pictured Egypt in various ways and one of these is portrayed by this early morning shot: the Nile and the date palms and the rocky Bg of the Valley of the Kings.
Though this is scanned froma slide, this is an excellent image with great lighting, the large stretch of calm water giving a great air of tranquility.

Hi James,
A classic postcard from Egypt. Lovely blue colour and the green horizon. The FG water mass gives such depth to the shot. The distant mountains and its reflection add strength to the shot. Simply beautiful. Very nicely composed and presented. Kudos.

Your Nile river picture is amazing. Your POV is great as well as the great are wonderful colours, DOF and sharpness of the image. Shot is composed perfectly and show the beauty of this river excellently. Note is fine too. Superb work and TFS.

Hi James,

I just did a search on Egypt and Luxor because my wife and I are heading there in November for a couple of weeks and this popped up, what a great shot.

The colours are stunning, were also heading to Cairo and Aswan, if you have any advice it would be greatly appreciated, especially on what lens and filters to take.

I will be packing my EF 16-35mm f2.8L, but would you recommend taking the EF400mm f/2.8?
