Colorful Ocean

I would love to give you the name of those little red fish, but I really don’t know. The dark red and bright red “flowers” are not vegetal but animals. In fact they are soft corals. Same thing for the middle gray plants. And the dark blue shade in the middle of the picture is the shadow of our dive boat.

When taking UW pictures and aiming camera at the surface, it is important to measure the ambient light. Ounce it is done, then adjust the flash exposure so it matches with the ambient light f/stop. Failing to do so, will result in a picture where the surface will be to bright, or almost black. “Fill-in flash” technique is as important underwater as it is on land.

Technical data:

Camera : Nikkormat EL
Accessory-1 : Ikelite camera housing with spherical dome port
Lens : 28mm f :2.0
F/stop : Not recorded
Shutter speed : Not recorded
Filter: +2 close-up lens
Flash : Vivitar 285
Accessory-2 : Ikelite flash housing
Tripod : None
Film : Ektachrome 64
Flatbed Scanner: Epson 4180

* Close-up is necessary when the housing is used with a spherical dome port in front of a wide angle lens. The spherical dome when in contact with the water, it creates a negative lens. This negative lens creates a virtual image very close to the camera. Unless you have a macro wide angle lens, it is necessary to put a close-up lens so you can focus real close with the wide angle lens.

Alain, this photo is quite stunning. The colours grabbed my attention straight away. And it is so sharp and clear. It is a wonderful scene, thank you for sharing.

Hi Alain

Great photo it's like a very big aquarium! :)

Nice colors and lighting. The fishes are so "live". Nice work.

Les couleurs sont tellement lumineuses. Bravo. Merveilleur contraste du bleu et du jaune.

It's an underwater parade and all the creatures are in their colorful costumes! Fantastic colors, and so many things to look at. You're so lucky to be able to see this in person. Well done. TFS!

I like these "looking upwards" shots. The lighting is good, which is hard to achieve under water...excellent reef picture.

Very good shot.

I like the colours and composition. Lighting is excellent.

I don't see red fish, but the yellow fish are of the Goldie family.

Wonderful colors and a great seascape. I like the close-up of the coral, fascinating and different for TN!

Alli

Very colorful. The blue background enhances the colors of the fishes. This reminds me of Nemo's school! And goes in as 1 of my favourite!

Quelle belle photo ! J'adore la photographie sous-marine même si je n'en ai jamais fait lors de mes plongées. Très belle réussite. Bravo !

Mario

tres belle photo , superbes couleurs ;) !

Amitiés ;) !

Super picture. Great colors, good light, excellent composition and very good point of view. Regards, Yvonne

Hi, nice photo. I like the colors of the reef and fish against the blue water. If you have not identified the fish yet, they look like female scalefin anthias (genus Pseudanthias) ranging from the red sea to Japan and Fiji. I saw these identified as a red sea endemic species on a different treknature photo. Anthias live in groups of many females with one dominant male. When the male dies or is removed one of the females will loose its pink eye stripe and develop a bright pink spot on its pectoral fin as it transforms into the next dominant male. I used Reef Fish Identification - Tropical Pacific by Allen, Steene, Humann, and DeLoach.
