The blue spotted stingray is found in the Indian and South Pacific Oceans, and is commonly seen on the coral reefs of North Queensland, Australia. Scientists know it as Dasyatis kuhlii.

The young hatch out of egg cases, and are pale grey or brown, spotted with black or rusty red and white. The pattern of markings is different with each young fish. As adults, they are light-pinkish brown, with numerous large blue spots that have darker margins.

Of course, since they are stingrays, they are quite flat, and lie partially buried in sand in shallow water. They have a sting in their tails that they will use if disturbed.

Because of the venomous sting in the tail, they do not have very many enemies, but one report from Australia that we have read states that "They are excellent eating when roasted over an open fire"! It seems that have an enemy that is common among many animals - people!

Great shot. The colours are excellent especially for an underwater shot.

My brother also shoots under water and I know how tough it is to get good results like this.

Well done and good composition.

I love underwater pictures! Very colorfull ray with beautifull eye and spots on its body.

Salut Alain,

Superbe photo sous-marine. Cette raie à points bleus et yeux jaunes me fait penser au sous-marin de Voyage aux fonds des Mers... tu dois surement te souvenir de ça !!!

Beautiful capture and colour on the stingray!!
What great lighting as well!!!
Awesome shot

Amazing sharp and colorful details on this stingray Alain.

The eye certainly seems to have an illuminating quality to it, and the POV and lighting are well done.

Thank you for sharing it with us.

Perfect. Nothing but praise here.

Awesome indeed. These are just great to take pictures of as well as just watch them lay there.

Hi, Alain.

Bravo.
