Updated 10/12/2008 This is a Black Kite (Milvus migrans), many thanks to Ivan & PeterZ for the I.D

Whilst sailing on Lake Nasser we stopped of at a site called "Es-Subu, Old Nubia" it was an early call that morning trying to beat the heat of the day and were heading ashore to view what was and still is an amazing old temple. (Posting on TE soon)

As we were about to disembark onto our launch to the temple I spotted some Kites of the back of the ship eager to get some shots I raced back up the plank from the little boat that we were all on and managed to grab this shot and several others before they disappeared.

Anyway I think this is a Whisterling Kite it seems to have very similar markings to the Kites I've seen here in Queensland, but if someone can confirm this I would be very grateful.

The kites seemed to be feeding on some of the food scraps that had been thrown overboard by the kitchen staff.

I've also included a shot in the W/S of the ship we were on showing it moored up at the location were this shot was taken.

Details; Shot Raw and converted to Jpeg, cropped and resized, sharpened slightly for posting.

Hello Rick,
A great capture at a fine moment as this kite goes through some aerobatics. I like the POV showing the plumage of the back and the wings with good detail.
This is a Black Kite (Milvus migrans), the species never appearing black but it is darker than the related Red Kite. The Whistling Kite is an Australian species.
TFS this fine image,
Cheers,
Ivan

Hello Rick,
What a brilliant capture showing the upper side of the Black Kite doing acrobatics!
The plumage looks wonderful in the sunlight and details are very sharp. A very fine background too.
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hi Rck,

An outstanding image as far as content goes, you really caught the bird in an amazing position, really gives a feel for what it's doing.

John

Hi Rick,
I can see you really had a great time back in Egypt.
A singular action shot the one you've caught here. Love the dynamic pose and movement suggested.
Is not an easy shot, to have the bird in focus while on his flight path, but you did it successfully.
Even with the relatively slow s. speed you've got plenty of fine details on the moving subject.
My compliments and thanks for share.
Best regards,
JM

hello Richard

on this moment that i am viewing your image,
this is the best in-flight shot of a bird of prey in TN,

Hi Richard
As a very new (today) member, I start browsing galleries on TN. No need to go far to discover this superb image!I also was on this boat a couple of years ago but was not as lucky as you were on this occasion. Anyway I did not have the lens for this one. Bravo for this action

Hi again,
What an impressive study of the wings of this black kite from your Egyptian trip and Lasser
Lake sail. This is a falling scene i have noticed several times here in Delhi when they dive down spotting a prey there is most of an impressive disply of their wings and plumage. You have picked up the details so well with a fine Pov.The dark tones of bird's plumage is in good contrast against the BG thus isolating very well.
TFS & Cheers
Silpa
