I spotted this village-weaver in the garden of the Senegambia beachhotel in Gambia. I think this garden is probably one of the best hotelgardens in Gambia. I stayed a week in this hotel and spotted only in the garden more than 65 species!!

The village Weaver is a resident breeding bird species in much of sub-Saharan Africa and has been introduced to Haiti. This ver abundant species occurs in a wide range of open habitats, including woodlands and human habitation. and frequently forms large noisy colonies in towns, villages and hotel grounds. This weaver builds a large coarsely woven nest made of grass and leaf strips with a downward facing entrance which is suspended from a branch in a tree. 2 - 3 eggs are laid. This is a colonial breeder, so many nests may hang from one tree. The village weaver is a stocky 15-17 cm. bird with strong conical bill. The breeding male has a black head and bill and chestnut nape. The upperparts and wings are yellow and black and the underparts are yellow. The non-breeding male has a yellow head with an olive crown, grey upperparts. The wings remain yellow and black.
The adult female has streaked olive upperparts, yellow and black wings and pale underparts. Young birds are like the female but browner on the back.

Hello Zeno,
Great sharp shot of a non-breeding Village Weaver from a fine POV and well composed with a Casuarina branch.
When we were in Gambia about 12 years ago we stayed at the Bungalow Beach, but we had a look at the Senegambia and thought it looked good. 66 species of birds!

Great shot - excellent detail and colour. I really like the casurina branch too.

I stayed in the Senegambia about 15 years ago and remember the grounds were teeming with birds.
