One more beauty from my Africa archives. This is Paradise Whydah (male) captured in the Kenya during my visit summer 2005.
I used my old 20D in combination with my 100-400 @ 400mm. In all my Africa trip I didn't use any tripod and all my shots are handhold, most of them from a car. This one is from hotel area with many trees and deep shadows. I used flash on this shot to bring more details. I found this guy singing really beautiful and this took my attention and some time to found him. I spend round 30min following this guy and waiting to get good shot... and I did few :)
Hope you like it :)

Breading male is unmistakable with a long, distinctively shaped tapering, black tail. The head and back are separated by a golden-buff collar, and the underparts are buffy with a rich chestnut breast. Female, non-breading male and immature are buffy above with dark steaks, striped black an white on top of the head and buffy-white below.

Feeds on large grass seeds such as millet, wild oats and spinifex along with the occasional termite and grubs. May feed on the ground or in bushes where grasses have grown winding and tangled in the branches...

Hej Ralf,
This Paradise Whydah is indeed a beauty and you made a fine sharp capture with good use of flash to highlight the colours: at the same time you have a fine natural blurred BG.
Superb shot!

It was 30 min well spent. The pose on the branch is very nice, and the bird is isolated from its BG very well. Well done.

Hello Ralf,

What a beauty you captured here! It was worth following this guy as the result is spectacular. I think the long tail makes it difficult to find a good composition but you found a great way to place the bird's body into one of the hotspots of the picture with the branch and tail feathers acting as guidelines to lead the eyes towards the subject. The two leaves on the branch just add some spice to your picture and the blurred background isolates the bird perfectly. The colors and contrast are excellent and the exposure was nailed down propperly to show the details in the dark areas. The black frame compliments your composition! Very well done! Thank you!

With Friendly Regards,
Eddie

What more can I add that has'nt already been said. Just a most beautiful photo.

Beautiful - plus all what already has been said! Fantastic Work! Cheers, Klaus

This is a great shot Ralf. How fun that he stuck around long enough that you could get more than one chance of getting a good shot... and close enough to use a flash! Lucky you! The vertical format is perfect for this composition. The exposure and colors are wonderful and the sharpness of the subject against the beautiful blurred background is very effective.
