El elefante africano de sabana (Loxodonta africana) es el mayor mamífero terrestre que existe en la actualidad. Se trata de una de las tres últimas especies de proboscídeos que sobreviven hoy en día.
Los machos alcanzan normalmente los 6,7 - 7 metros de longitud y 3 - 3,35 metros de altura, con un peso de 5,4 a 6 toneladas, aunque el rango "general" es de 2,7 - 3,8 metros de altura, y un peso de 4,5 - 7,3 toneladas
El elefante africano de sabana se caracteriza por su gran cabeza, amplias orejas que cubren los hombros , trompa larga y musculosa, presencia de dos "colmillos" en la mandíbula superior, bien desarrollados en ambos sexos aunque mayores en los machos.en su ambiente natural entre 40 a 50 años pues un elefante adulto no tiene enemigos naturales, con excepción del hombre, a partir de los 40 sus dientes se desgastan y le es imposible comer y mueren, en cautiverio pueden vivir mas tiempo por los cuidados y alimentación que reciben, pueden llegar a los 60 años.

This African Elephant seems a little bit lost in this big plain and the picture is somehow touching. May be a little less centred picture would have been even better.
I see that you are from Altea. There lives the painter E. Schlotter whom I know personnaly, may be you know him too.

your title sums up nicely what your subject is all about,"The big elephant!"Your capture is a very good one with details and colour being what they are,it is a shame that a good part of this animal is shaded as details are lost to shadows.I like your big elephant!Thanks for sharing. Bob
