[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
An amazing place to visit and the plants are stunning. I must admit that in reality the reason I went to Mt. Kenya was to look at these plants as well as trek around the mountain. The landscape is so different.

A note on the ability of this plant to withstand freezing taken from the internet.

'Lobelia raises its leaves above ground and therefore out of the coldest zone. Isolation and the storage of heat are features that enable the plant to delay the cooling of the tissue in young and sensitive plant parts at night until the intensive tropical sun can heat them up again in the morning. Older tissues are frost tolerant. While the tempertaure descends they can secrete cell water into the intercellular spaces so ice formation will take place outside the cells. The cell sap that remains in the cell is extremely rich in sugar compounds and highly concentrated which enables it to act as antifreeze.'

Its also interesting to know that the main part of the plant is hollow and can contain a few litres of water.

Hello Simon,

This plant is amazing. It's hard to imagine it's the same genus as European lobelias.
Very interesting note!
Best greetings,
Michal
