Back from Morocco:

This portrait of a tenebrionid, Morica planata (Fabricius 1801), demonstrates another problem I had with the compact camera: the focus is on the prothorax, not on the eyes. With little light there is just no way to adjust the focus with a screen finder.

The beetle occurs in Southern Spain and in Northern Africa,its around 28 mm long and occurs in great numbers in places with living and dead vegetation, this one on the city wall of Tetouan (click on "Map: View" for details). There is a longstanding and unresolved debate as to what the blackness does to tenebrionids.

Hi Dietrich!

Good title and very nice shot. You're right - compacts often can't set focus on small things. Next time try to focus on sand just before beetle - it sometimes works :-) Morocco seems to be great place for desert and nature lover.

Hi Dietrich,i'm fascinating from your moroccan encounters.I been ther me too,but in Mars and maybe near the 0 degrees wasn't the best moment for the insects..ehehe...this is a beautiful beetle taken whit excellent sharpness and great contrast,excellent work my friend,my best compliments,Luciano (thanks for your very usual comment about my last butterfly!)
