[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Spur-thighed Tortoise is one of four European members of the Testudinidae family of tortoises. The other members of the family are Hermann's Tortoise (Testudo hermanni), the Marginated Tortoise (Testudo marginata) and Horsfield's Tortoise (Testudo horsfieldii).

Elles sont très variables selon la sous-espèce ou la population. La Testudo graeca graeca est une tortue de taille relativement moyenne qui ne dépasse guère 20 cm de longueur. Si l’on excepte les Testudo whitei (Bennett 1836) la taille record pour une femelle est de 19,8cm , pour un mâle dans la nature, 15,1cm et pour un mâle élevé en captivité, 18,8 cm. Les femelles sont en général plus grosses que les mâles. Ces derniers présentent un plastron postérieurement concave, une queue relativement longue. La dossière est modérément bombée et son contour est quadrangulaire ou elliptique.

Contrairement à ce que son nom peut laisser croire, on ne la trouve pas en Grèce ! Son appellation de "grecque" vient des motifs dessinés sur sa carapace qui rappelleraient les dessins d’une frise grecque. La Testudo graeca graeca a une distribution générale principalement autour de la Méditerranée. On la rencontre au nord-ouest de l'Afrique, depuis le Maroc occidental (à l'exception des régions désertiques soumises à un bioclimat saharien) jusqu'en Tunisie, voire peut-être au nord-ouest de la Libye, en passant par le Nord algérien. En Europe, seuls quelques isolats sont localisés au sud-ouest de l'Espagne ( petites populations en Murcie, Almeria et Doñana) et dans les îles des Baléares (Ibiza, Formentera et Mallorca). Elle a été introduite en Sicile, en Sardaigne et peut-être en Italie. Il est surprenant de lire çà et là qu’elle a été introduite en France, car nous ne disposons pour l’instant d’aucune information sur ce sujet. Elle vit généralement jusqu’à 700 m d’altitude mais on peut la trouver bien plus haut ! L'espèce est présente dans une variété d'habitats incluant les plaines, les maquis, les forêts méditerranéennes, les dunes et les semi-déserts. Ce chélonien supporte un habitat d'une grande sécheresse pauvre en végétaux.

Hi Ferran . It nice to see a Tortoise on TN we dont get to see many. Shops in England are not allowed to sell them any more which is a good thing. I like your low POV looking staight at the face . Taken with fine detail and bright colours. well done TFS.

Hi Ferran,

We don't see many Tortoises on TN so this is a most pleasant treat. A wonderful shot showing off his cute face, legs and marvelous shell. I love the natural colors and the terrific details of his skin and shell markings. He looks great in the natural setting.

Bonjour Ferran,
Les tortues terrestres sont devenues tellement rares en France que leur rencontre reste toujours exceptionnelle. La seule espèce indigèbne est la Tortue d'Hermann, et je n'ai jamais vu la Tortue grecque. C'est une bonne idée de l'avoir cadréede face, le point de vue permet d'apprécier davantage cet anmimal timide et craintif.
