Taken in the Etosha Pan [ Namibia] at the Okaukuejo camp site.Ideally elephants prefer to stay as close to water as possible, and this accounts for the semi devastated vegetation often found around pans and rivers.First browsing the vegetation closest to water and once they con no longer sustain themselves they are forced to move futher afield in search of fresh food. They have 24 highly efficient teeth [ molars] six on either side of the upper and lower jaws. When molar number 1 becomes worn it moves forward and drops out being replaced by molar number 2.Molar no 6 is the final molar to come into wear. As it wears down the elephant is able to chew less and less and eventually leads to starvation.

Hallo Irwin
Great action moment you manage to capture here. Love the reflection in the water and the stream of water droplets falling from the elephant's mouth. Like the background which shows us the visibility of his environment. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna

Hi Erwin

Great timing on this shot capturing the elephant at the moment that the trunk was inserted into its mouth and the water was squirted, leaving a trail of water falling down and frozen in mid air. This was even more so highlighted with the backlight effect of the setting sun. I also like the slight highlighting achieved on the edges of the said backlight effect. I like the "closed eye" facial expression – it really seems like this elephant is savouring every drop of water it is drinking.

The only slight nit is perhaps that the elephant itself was slightly shady due to the soft light. Unfortunately there was obviously not much you could do about it because you would have burnt out other areas to the point of distraction if you tried to adjust or compensated the exposure on the elephant only.

Good effort and TFS.

Hi Erwin,
Just too good. One can appreciate the relaxed giant tusker enjoying drinking water & trail of water dribbling down against sunlight. I would appreciate you tell us under what circumstances you clicked this shot too in your photographer's note. Cheers !
