Namib-Naukluft National Park

Location: Namibia
Nearest city: Windhoek
Coordinates: 24°32′47″S, 15°19′47″E
Area: 49,768 km²
Established: August 1, 1979
Governing body: Ministry of Environment and Tourism

Namib-Naukluft National Park is an ecological preserve in the Namib Desert in southwest Africa, thought to be Earth’s oldest desert. The park is the largest game park in Africa, and a surprising collection of creatures manages to survive in the hyper-arid region, including snakes, geckos, unusual insects, hyenas, and jackals. More moisture comes in as a fog off the Atlantic Ocean than falls as rain, with the average 106 millimeters of rainfall per year concentrated in the months of February and April.

The winds that bring in the fog are also responsible for creating the park’s towering sand dunes, whose burnt orange color is a sign of their age. The orange color develops over time as iron in the sand is oxidized (like rusty metal); the older the dune, the brighter the color. These dunes are the tallest in the world, in places rising above the desert floor more than 300 meters (almost 1000 feet). The dunes taper off near the coast, and lagoons, wetlands, and mudflats located along the shore attract hundreds of thousands of birds.

‘Namib’ means open space and the Namib Desert gave its name to form Namibia – “land of open spaces”. The park was established in 1907 when the German Colonial Administration proclaimed the area between the Swakop River and the Kuiseb River a game reserve. The park has some of the most unusual wildlife and nature reserves in the world, and covers an area of 19,215 sq. miles or 49,768 km² (an area approximately the size of Switzerland). The region is characterised by high isolated inselbergs/ kopjes (the Afrikaans for “isolated desert mountains”) which are made up of dramatic blood red granites, rich in feldspars and sandstone.

Hi Andrea,
great sharpness and colors in this picture. The choice of F/20 brings a great DOF. It's more than just a postcard taped to the wall, though it's a funny idea ;)

Hi Andrea,
A beautiful picture of the Namibian Desert. The light is perfect and the saturated colours add to the quality of the picture. Definately one that can go to the wall. TFS.

Anton

Hi Andrea,
The light and colors in this photo are really beautiful. It gives the entire photo this serene feel. Sharpness and depth are outstanding. It looks like you ahs an awesome trip to Namibia.

I am not so sure about the frame, it keeps drawing me eyes away from the landscape.

TFS,
Niek

Hello Andrea,
Beautiful colours... Well composed!
Good textures and pleasant details...
I'd never use a framing like this but that's me!
Greetings,
Pablo -

your photo is stunning and the landscape is great. The DOF and exposure are spot on and the composition off the photo itself is very good, but I'm afraid I really do not like the tape for the corners. I'm not sure it is appropriate for TN and does as Niek says, detract from the picture.

The photo itself deserves the smiley, not the frame...

TFS

Saludos... Ricardo

Very beautiful landscape with intense colors and a central contrast wonderful between the sky and the dunes.
Appropriate close up of the tree and although that usually not I like the very loaded squares, the detail of the tape adhesive, it is very pleasant in this case.
Greetings... Ricardo

The frame is distracting but the photo itself is a lovely beautifully exposed and composed image with excellent saturation and sharpness. The simple classic composition works well.

Hi Andrea, this a great landscape. The lighting and the colours are really good especially the sand. Great details and well composed with the tree on the right. If I am honest I don't like the frame as it makes the picture feel a bit unfinished and is distracting but that is just my honest personal opinion and this kind of thing is very subjective but the photo is brilliant. Very well done and TFS.
Dean.

Hello Andrea!
Beautiful landscape! Great pov and framing, superb frame you chose. Colours are wonderful and that wood i like it a lot.
Bravo!

Hi Andrea,
That is one beautiful landscape shot. Excellent qualtiy light has warm tones and colors without any trace of harshness. Detail and DOF look great. The framing is cute, but it detracts from such a high quality photo. This one should receive a real quality matte and frame to be hung on the wall.
Scott

Now that 100% Namibia just like I dream it, maybe a family of elephants or a solitary large mane lion wondering around. Simply beautiful.

no word...

like your sellotape..:)
namibia calls and as i was looking for your lion shots i came over this...and it made my heart beat more..a fine colour balance between the reddy tones and blue of the sky keeps a tension which must make namibia atmospherics quite unique..the lonely tree.. with its genre..a landmark issue in most shots does its work and holds up the contrasts well
soft and warm inviting sand and foreground scrub finish the interest.
the tonality is suberb along with pov and sharpness makes this more than a post card
cheers
geof
