This lion is photographed not far away from Halali restcamp where I stayed the night. I was leaving the camp in the morning and after a while I saw two vehicles on the gravel road. They were spotting a group of 6 lions. Two males and a four females. In the beginning the animals were everything but contentious. After 20 minutes or so this king raised his head...
I was lucky to see the animals as there was a lot of rain and so the chances I could spot these kind of animals at the waterholes were very small as there was water everywhere. Some roads were closed in Etosha

From wikipedia...

The lion (Panthera leo) is a member of the family Felidae and one of four big cats in the genus Panthera. With exceptionally large males exceeding 250 kg (550 lb) in weight, it is the second-largest living cat after the tiger. Wild lions currently exist in Sub-Saharan Africa and in Asia with a critically endangered remnant population in northwest India, having disappeared from North Africa, the Middle East, and Western Asia in historic times. Until the late Pleistocene (about 10,000 years ago), the lion was the most widespread large land mammal beside humans. They were found in most of Africa, much of Eurasia from western Europe to India and, in the Americas, from the Yukon to Peru.

Hola Annick,
preciosa foto,
buen foco y estupendo pose...
saludos amigo.

He is a King for sure! This must be so impressive to see this animal in his natural environment... I hope I'll have the chance to live such a moment one day. What I like most in this picture is natural tones of colors, composition and exposure. The purple tones of colors fit his fur very nicely. Thanks,
Claudine

hallo Annick,

mooie plaat van de leeuw.
Mooie perfecte dof en pov.
Prachtige detailering en kleuren.

Gert

A superb lion finely captured within its natural elements Annick, while the downcast weather provided the best kind of diffused illumination. TFS this fine image indeed my friend!
Cheers,
Mehmet

Hi Annick,
Klassefoto!
Groet,
Peter

Hello Annick,
Very beautiful capture, great sharpness and framing.. Well done

Hi Annick,

I hope you received my answer to your email. You have shown this king well, considering the weather conditions, with the vegetation of the area. Those eyes seem to be looking straight at you as if he is wondering if you would be tasty.

TFS

Hi Annick

No matter how classic this may be, it's superb!
The big boy, in its natural habitat and isolated so well is always a terrific capture!
I really like your use of shallow DOF here (i know i abuse that line, but your really do it perfectly) and the fact that in a 3D pattern, the lion is bordered by out-of-focus vegetation both towards us and in the BG.
The exposure and colors are all spot-on and the soft light on it is just great.

Bravo and TFS
Horia

PS: maybe in a few years, after i get 2-3 raises at my job, i will be able to join you and Claudine :) I'd love to!

Hi Annick
Your photo is, as always, perfect in all respects. I love the mood in the photo - it is how the veld becomes just before it rains.TFS.
Mike

Hi Annick,
This Panthera is doin' what it does best, resting in style :)
Excellent exposure under overcast skies.
Great color, detail, & DOF isolating him in the frame..
I like the comp & he looks very good framed in his natural habitat.
I just saw a piece on cable in the "Planet Earth" series. (Animal Planet).
A pride of over 30 lions attacked an elephant at night, took it down..Rare but it happens.
Very well done,
Howard

hello Annick

very beautiful photography of the KING of the animals,
shot with fine POV, DOF and framing, beautiful warm luminosity
and colour tones, great sharpness and details, TFS
