During our August/September 2011 holiday in Etosha, Namibia we moved from the camp Okaukuejo to Namutoni the last camp. Due to the corrugations on the Park roads and pulling caravans, we decided to exit the Park and travel by tar road to the Namutoni gate. This way we could replenish our supplies as well. Unfortunately my vehicle broke down and we had to spend two nights in a caravan park in Otjiwarongo. What a frustration!!! Fortunately for me I stumbled upon this little fella while wandering through the caravan park. I knew the speed was slow for a free hand shot but I think my gambling paid off.
Enjoy and comments are welcome.
Best regards,
Carl

Blue Waxbill {Uraeginthus angolensis}

The Blue Waxbill is a small, slender powder-blue bird, smaller than a sparrow. The bill is short and conical and pinkish-grey in colour. The crown, back of the head and back are light brown.

The rump is light blue and the face and upper breast are light blue. In the male the underparts, save for the belly centre and undertail coverts are bright sky blue. In the female, the blue extends only onto the breast and flanks, and the belly is off-white.

Quick Facts

Name: Uraeginthus angolensis

Distribution: Common all over Southern Africa.

Habitat: Woodlands and grasslands with shrubs.

Diet Description: Insects and seeds.

Size: 12 cm

Socialisation:
Usually seen in loose parties, or in pairs when breeding, they are often in the company of other small seed eaters. Fly into the nearest tree when disturbed

Reproduction:
They breed mainly from December to May. The nest is a small round ball with a short spout like entrance on the side. The nest is built from green, flowering grass stems.

Hi Carl
good colors and lovely pose, almost perfect
however 2 things could be improved
a daylight flash would have brought a lovely catchlight in the eye

Hallo Carl,
Groet,
Peter

Bonjour Carl,

Hi Boet,
I think it's an excellent image despite what you say. These are birds that don't normally sit still for long and you've managed to capture it superbly with great detail and POV. Great notes.
Well done Boet.

Hello Carl,
A superb capture of a Blue Waxbill.
The low POV is great for the pose, taken with top sharpness and good DOF to show this little bird well against the busy OOF ground. The cxomposition couldn't be better too.
This species seems new for TN. If so congratulations!
Thanks and enjoy your weekend,
Ivan

Hi Carl,
I know its not so easy to take such good photos of the smaller birds. They are so fast and leave you little time to react. Well done with a splendid photo!
Kind regards
Steve
NS:
Maak 'n draai as jy in Melkbosstrand se rigting kom.
Vriendelike groete
Steve

Dear Carl

I am delighted to see such a good photo of a Blue Waxbill!

I have been living in the Lowveld since 1989 and have not one good capture. They love our feeder and the bath, but do not appear to be able to stand still for more than a few seconds...

Even the videos are disappointing, because I do not follow the birds' movements fast enough.

Congratulations on a fine photo,
Greetings from the Tzaneen Dam,
Ingrid Shaul
