The Dead Pan of Sossusvlei lies in the Namibian Desert some 50 kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean. It is a 5-hour drive from Windhoek, the capital of Namibia. Geologically, this feature is a clay pan in the flood plain of the Tsauchah River, which flows on the average only once in a decade. Towering above the clay pan are sand dunes that reach 350 meters elevation above the river bed. They are veritable mountains of sand and the tallest dunes in the world.
Dead Vlei is a large expanse of dry white clay with only the skeletons of ancient camel-thorn trees left, some of which are over 500 years old. Many consider it to be more starkly beautiful than Sossusvlei. The dead vlei lies about two-thirds of a mile (1km) away from Sossusvlei. This salt encrusted dry lake is named after its large dead camel thorn trees.
These tell of a time when plentiful water allowed them to grow to full height, but as the climate changed and the water disappeared they died. Amidst this desperate scene comes new life in the form of a few young camel thorn trees struggling to survive and on the western slopes, some bright green Nara melons defying the shifting sand.

Hi Aivar
Very interesting capture and a great POF of this phenomenon. A very informative note too.
The colours are rich and well saturated. DOF is excellent thanks to the f/11. Exposure is spot-on and very well managed.
Great work and TFS.

Hello Aivar...
A fine composition of this hostile landscape!
The different layers broken by the dead trees are quite intriguing...
Colours are very good in this crisp image, and I think your POV adds an extra effect...

Lovely picture, Aivar. I like different layers of natural colours. The dead trees evoke the sense of desolation and destruction a desert leaves in its wake.

Great shot, great place, i've been there too!!!

Hi Aivar,

It is a really stark landscape, set off by amazing colours and combinations of dead trees. The frame sets the picture off wonderfully.

Fantastic composition and exposure, you chose a very interesting subject, the camel thorn trees even though dead are a wonder to stare at with the magnificant sand dune background. :)

Well this image makes me thirsty! It really is an effective composition. I like the three bands of horizontal color and the large tree tying them all together. It's nice.

This is a wonderful landscape! It looks very hot and inhospitable! I like the orange of the sand contrasting with the blue sky. Very nice composition and POV. TFS!

Hi Aivar, great shot. You have captured the dry atmosphere very well here and I like the way the branches of the dying trees are reaching out. Good detail, colours, POv etc. TFS.
Dean.

Hi Aivar! I love these surreal and desolate landscapes! This one has some very nice composition with the trees well placed and the point of view low. Super image!

Hello Aivar,
Beautiful landscape. It reminds me a lot of the beginning of the movie "The cell". Do you know it? I'm sure it was shot in the same place :-)
Best greetings,
Michal

Bonjour Aivar,
Bravo pour cette image ! Ces arbres morts sont très photogénique (voir mes publications sur TE).
Beau travail.

Hi Aivar!
These African colours are really great!!
In Europe it is difficult to see a sky without any clouds or airplane wakes...
Thanks, Enrico
