African Wild Cat
Felis silvestris

At least 13 subspecies have been recorded, based largely on colour variations. Appearance and form is similar to a domestic cat but it’s longer and larger. The diagnostic feature is the reddish hair on the backs and ears. This is not present in domestic cats. This one belongs to the lybica spp. group and its scientific name is sometimes recorded as Felis lybica.

The major problem with this species is that it hybridizes readily with domestic cats. They are very widespread but seldom seen. Found throughout Africa but absent from the dry desert areas and tropical rainforests. It is considered threatened in certain areas because of the hybridization.

Usually solitary except during the brief mating period and when females have kittens. They are primarily nocturnal but can occasionally be seen on cool overcast days. The normally feed on small rodents but also takes mammals up to the size of rabbits and hyrax. Young antelope and ostrich chicks have also been recorded.

It's one of my favourite animals. I have a special preference for these lesser cats (Felis) as the larger ones (Pantera) tend to take centre stage so easily. I just love this photo and it was a bright ray of sunshine in the crunch time I currently experience. I will catch up with the crits as time permits. Hope you like it too.

She's stunning. Being a 'cat' person I would say that!
A fantastic pose. She doesn't look wild at all.
Superb detail, the fg and bg are great.
Thank's for posting.

Just sitting there like out normal moggy cat Gert. But this one is much more special. Lovely composition with the light on her. A big difference I notice is that she's leaner, not like our cuddled and protected domestic cats. I never realised that these wild cats were there. Thank you very much for showing her to us.

I see why you like these cats.
Super capture and a wall hanger. You did well with the lighting. The composition is excellent with a touch of green on the bottom.
Beautiful work.
The first thing I said when I saw the thumbnail, "Simba" almost looks like my Cat "Simba" who acts like a lion. He's an old man now, 13 years old and can still hunt very well. Yep, believe me, red ears. :) :)

Hello Gerhard,

It's really great to see you post again! What a wonderful picture! I love the warm colors/light in this photo. Pose is excellent and the composition is also very good. Great POV & DOF. I remember you posting an African wild cat a while ago and you accompanied that photo with the best note I read on TN so far. :) Well done & TFS!

Regards,
Pieter

Yes, I like it very much too, wonderful warm african light and an accurate performance. It looks so imaculate and healthy that I would say it is domestic. Nice work, best wishes.

Wonderful capture Gerhard, stunning detail and great light in this shot. Composition and POV are very good. Nice work.

Hi Gerhard,

An excellent capture of this African Wild Cat. A regal pose, and the side light makes a strong composition. The OOF backround is great. Was that natural, or is that some type of additional blur in post process? I really like it.

Scott

Hi Gerhard, it is a beautiful image. Sharp and detailed as usual, great composition, great colours and I just love the directional light. I agree with you that the big cats upstage this one too much. TFS :)

Hello Gerhard

Volgens mij is het een huiskat, grapje.
Prachtige african Cat gerhard. Toch nog even tijd gemaakt om even te ontspannen mijn vriend. geeft niets. Ook ontspannen heb je nodig om te kunnen overleven in deze maatschappij. Goed werk,
gr. Jaap

Lovely lighting on the pussy-cat, excellent details and composition. It does look so much like an everyday cat, even when I know it isn't! My only nit is the BG, there is something going on there (it's not that distracting), is that sue to the IS on the cat? I've also read that some like it...so I may be in a minority to nit pick it!

Great shot Gerhard.

I am glad I stopped to look who had posted this little puddy cat Gerhard, it nearly lost its ninth life, if you know what I mean.
very nice shot. I agree it is nice to see one of the smaller cats , so much harder to capture because they are normally much shyer. TFS

Great shot Gert,
The lighting is superb. Excellent details, colours, sharpness and composition.
DOF and POV are spot on. Excellent capture.
Thanks for posting

My mother has the same at home ;-) Beautiful and interesting composition for this cat ! Good pose, colors, DOF and details ! Thanks for sharing Gerhard.

Very good title Gerhard! The cat in the sun, together with it's majestuous pose are providing a superb image. Beautiful colors showing it's dense fur on the best way. Great catch too, as I guess, they are not so easy to spot. To me, it's a relaxing picture as well. Well done my friend!

Excellent lighting has resulted in a crisp sharp image.
Perfect exposure has resulted in a charming portrait.
Superb!

Beautiful picture, Gerhard.
I'm not a cat friend, but this is great.
Very nice light, good details, well composed and good colours
Excellent work.

Razor sharp my friend, Excellent work..Sorry
it took so long to get back to you, I took
a fall trimming one of my oak trees - broke a couple of ribs and hit the the old noggin pretty good on the way down..I've been laid up..You know I planned on taking time away from TN but not like this!!!

A great capture - she looks a lot like my housecats, amazing that she is feral. The brow looks heavier and she is very muscular. Nice post!
