Robber Fly
Unknown species

I still find it nearly impossible to ID SA Robber Flies.

Therefore a little history about the taxation of Robber Flies (Asilidae) I found on the web.

"Linnaeus (Linné; 1758), in his tenth edition of ''Systema naturae'' erected the genus Asilus, ascribing to it 11 species, and added 4 others in his twelfth edition (1767) of the same work.

Later, considerable work was done by Schiner, Williston, Lynch Arribálzaga, Philippi, Jaennicke, Roeder and Becker. by 1900 a total of 254 genera had been proposed, of which 170 are still valid.

In 1962 HULL stated: "The ROBBER FLIES, or ASILIDAE, comprise one of the largest and most abundant families of present day insects. Distributed through all parts of the world, over 400 genera subgenera have been proposed and about 4,761 species are known. In addition, 18 genera and 39 species have been described from Eocene, Oligocene, and Miocene; 15 of these genera are also Recent [cf. Fossil].

As far as I could tell there are now 530 genera and 7003 species.

This Robber Fly was very large. (40mm) I have a fly trap in my backyard to keep the flies out of the house and I found it hunting close by. I will try and look for it again today to see if I g=could get a photo of it with a kill. I am really starting to enjoy the macro lens. :)

I hope you like it.

Amaising details of the insect!
Perfect sharpness!
So clear!
Very GOOD job!
5* photo!

Hi Gerhard

Wow... scary stuff. Looks like some huge mutated being from a SciFi movie. Such amazing clear detail! An impressive shot. It stands out well against the OOF BG. Nice work. TFS.

Your quest seems almost impossible, I tried to ID, Ger, but unsuccesfull. Still, the photo is what atreacted me in the game anyway, creepy but I LOVE IT. Great magnificantion ratio, pleasant croping, outstanding color, great luminosity, the sharpness is very uniform and your subject has just the greatest shagy coat!

Hi Gerhard,
Incredible detailed, very sharp image,
very well composed.
Excellent shot!

Niesamowite, bardzo ³adne ¶wiat³o i kadr, u nas w polsce nie ma takich stworzeñ...:)

Your macro lens is producing some good results and this one is stunning.
So much incredible detail is revealed, even the damaged wing. looks quite different to the robber flies I've seen over here, which are much more slender. Well done.

Great detail of the insect. Excellent sharpness and colors.

Dagse Gerhard,

Another one of your very good pictures. The focus is very good, but I'm particularly impressed with the the DOF you managed, taking into consideration the fact that you took the picture with a macro lens. Well done, and please let us know if you manage to ID the fly.

Jolly good shot old man. You know I love these robbers. I've got one to post that you will like, I found it at De Wildt and the same one in Japie's garden. Lovely details and good DOF. Great stuff Gerhard.

I dont know why this little critters always tend to look OE or harsh. I have plenty of shots and never published because they arent by far as good as this one. Very well done.
Hope you have access soon to those "probably Xylarias".
Regards, Felipe.

Cracking Macro Gerhard,

Nicely composed and good exposure.

Félicitations pour les détails et la lumière.J'aime bien la pose de l'insecte sur ce promontoire de couleur rouille qui s'harmonise bien avec le sujet. Le Bg est propre et fait bien ressortir l'insecte.

Merci Gerhard!
