Wolf Spider
Unknown Species

The family Lycosidae is a large family with a worldwide distribution represented by 96 genera and more than 3000 species. The Afrotropical Region has a very rich fauna, with 54 known genera, while 28 genera and 159 species are known from Southern Africa.

Wolf spiders are abundant in grassland, savanna, Nama-Karoo and Succulent-Karoo. They are frequently found in agro-ecosystems and some species are associated with fresh water.

Many species of wolf spiders hunt during the day, but some are nocturnal. When at rest they usually are found under stones or debris on the ground. They have good vision and their sense of touch is highly developed. Contrary to common belief, wolf spiders do not always run down their prey. Recent studies indicate that they tend towards a "sit-and-wait" strategy. Prey is grabbed with the chelicerae and a basket is formed around the prey with the legs before it is bitten by the chelicerae.

hey are able to run with great agility on the surface of the water. Pirata are able to stay beneath the water for up to an hour. They make flimsy silk retreats beneath leaves. A number of species of Lycosa and Geolycosa, are known as burrowing wolf spiders. They live in silk lined burrows. The entrances to the burrows are either provided with a turret consisting of a collar made of sticks, pieces of grass or small stones, or closed by a cork-like trapdoor.

This one was pulled out of the archives. I was sorting and deleting old junk. Did not have an SLR camera then and my PP work has improved. Hope you like it.

Martians are coming! ;-) Excellent capture Gerhard! I love this POV, pose and light. Old cam, but nice photo.

This is lovely!
I like the spiders pose a lot. It seems he felt a bit insecure because he keeps his legs very close to the body.
The picture is perfectly framed, has really good details and superb warm lighting.
I like it a lot!
VERY WELL DONE & TFS

An amazing shot! The exposure looks to be spot on here. Detail is very sharp, and DOF looks good. Flawless composition and framing. A really good shot here. You should have shown us this a long time ago.

Hi Gerhard, I like the pose of this one, it does look like a wolf, poised and ready to move! Good composition, sharpness and exposure. Shows what can be done even without the SLR and software packages. Nicely done :)

Nice shot. The spiders seems to have a nice expression on its face.
