Red-lipped Snake (Crotaphopeltis hotamboeia)

Also known as: Herald Snake

It’s a small snake with a broad head and short tail. It grows up to 700mm in length.

The presence of this snake in SA was first noted in the Eastern Province Herald newspaper. Hence it's unusual common name. Living in marshy areas, it feeds at night on amphibians. Their prey is grabbed and held until it has been immobilised by the venom. It has large blade like back fangs. It is belligerent and when threatened it flattens its head and flares the lips, much like a viper. It bites readily, and the wound bleeds freely, but no toxic symptoms have been recorded in a bite by this species on humans. The snake is very easy to tame and some people keep them as pets.

I found this one last night in my garden when I took the dog outside. It was such fun convincing the wife to hold the flashlight while I caught it to photograph and return to the wild outside the yard. My dog would surely have killed it. I have been bitten by this species when I was much younger, it hurts as hell! Like a bee sting only three times more. The bite area gets red and swollen; it stays like that for two-three days. After the effect of the venom wears off it is still painful much like a bruise.

The snake was in a glass jar (hence the strange textured BG) when I took this photo. I posted a WORKSHOP PHOTO of it on the lawn where I caught it, so that you can see the whole snake.

Excellent Gerhard... I love the serpents and whenever an image of quality like this is published, I fascinate to me to be able to enjoy it.
Beautiful POV and frame with very good sharpness and brightnessand colorful really pleasant .
And a good contribution of workshop to know the complete reptile.

Great macro Gerhard.
Very good sharpness with good details, nice colours nd composition. Great note like always.
Great work my friend.

A good shot and interesting write up. I love snakes. We used to catch sea snakes (banded coral snake) in Niue as kids. We had no idea how venomous they were.I sometimes wish we could have them in NZ, but our fragile ecosystems don't handle too many introduced species.

As always.

Hi Gerhard, nice shot!wouldn't wanna be bitten by one of those, sounds very painful.good details and colour.well done!

Gerhard, Interesting post. You have done a great job on this & it shows! Its so great to see this serpent from your area..

gerhard 1st a thank you for caring enough to get it to a place of safty too many snakes end up being killed because they are in the wrong place. great image with so much detail, the head is spot on.the note is great too enough information hopefully to stop people panicing when one turns up.

Really pleasant shot, the BG is a bit weird.
Well done.

Good work Gerhard, I think the jar has caused very little distortion. Great shot of a snake that I haven't seen before. Great note, thanks for posting.

Nice close up considering that there was an irregular glass between you and the snake. I would not like to fing this in my garden Gerhardt, I like snakes but not to be bitten by then. And some people say fungi are dangerous, less than this...

Gerhard, another brilliant photo. And a scaring one. The colors of the snake are very beautiful.

wow, what a snake, so close too!!!!!..... I just cannot imagine catching snakes..... here in Cambodia, there is a snake if it bites you: you bleed for days, then your body rots, and turns black..... often even with anti-venom. So they cut off the part where the snake bit. More people are killed by this one snake here, then land mines. I just keep away from snakes, (except an occasional snake charmer cobra, and many snake charmers are killed every year also by cobras). I give your wife lots of credit too!
