Tiger
Panthera tigris

Tigers are an endangered species. They live in Asia in a variety of habitats: from the tropical evergreen and deciduous forests of southern Asia to the coniferous, scrub oak, and birch woodlands of Siberia. Researchers think that there are between 5,000 and 7,500 wild tigers living in the world today.

Tigers (and all other carnivores) are descended from civet-like animals called Miacids that lived during the age of the dinosaurs about 60 million years ago. These small mammals, with long bodies and short flexible limbs, evolved over millions of years into several hundred different species, including cats, bears, dogs and weasels. Approximately 37 cat species exist today, including Panthera tigris, the tiger.

Sub species
Amur or Siberian Tiger (Panthera tigris altaica)
360–406 still exist in the wild. About 490 captive tigers are managed in zoo conservation programs. The Amur or Siberian tiger lives primarily in the woodlands of eastern Russia, with a few tigers found in north-eastern China and northern North Korea.

Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris tigris)
3,159–4,715 tigers live in the wild, with about 333 in captivity, primarily in zoos in India. Most Bengal tigers live in India, although some range through Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Myanmar.

Indochinese Tiger (Panthera tigris corbetti)
1,227–1,785 Indochinese tigers are left in the wild, and about 60 live in zoos in Asia and the U.S.A. The distribution of the tiger is centred in Thailand. Indochinese tigers are also found in Myanmar, southern China, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and peninsular Malaysia.

South China Tiger (Panthera tigris amoyensis)
20-30 South China tigers still exist in the wild. Currently 47 South China tigers live in 18 zoos, all in China. The South China tiger is found in central and eastern China.

Sumatran Tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae)
About 400 wild Sumatran tigers are believed to exist, primarily in the island's five national parks. 210 captive animals live in zoos around the world. The Sumatran tiger is found only on the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

I was very pleased to find this Tiger in the nature reserve (see previous post on the reserve here.) close to where I stay. The only Tigers I have seen so far were in Zoos. This one is in a game camp in natural surroundings. I was only five meters away from this tiger when I took this photo. I must say that when one is used to Lions this Tiger is quite impressive when you notice that it’s larger and heavier than our “King of the jungle”. Truly a magnificent animal and to see him and his mate playing was such a privilege. I have no idea what sub-species this is and would appreciate it if anyone can help with the ID.

Wow Gerhard, I'm so jealous for your close encounter with this magnificant animal! And for this terrific photo! Fantastic colors and focus. Love the texture of his coat - would love to run my fingers over it... but suppose I won't ;>) Would like to have the BG more blurred, but very nice regardless. -Jenn

Superb smile for this great cat ;-).
All works very well : DOF, colours, sharpness...
Wonderful, especially in "wild" conditions.
Good job you did.

An excellent portrait of my favorite big cat. A beautiful soft light, superb color, and fine detail. Very well composed and framed. Nice Work!

This tiger is wonderful, they're my favorite animal, I so wish I could just ruffle his ears! I love the look on his face, so intent on what he's looking at. The background compliments the shot so well. Super!

What a magnificent shot! The fact it was so close gives a special dimension to this picture. It adds a kind of human factor, like if it was a friend of yours. Still, the typical ferocious feline eye and half open mouth are well present, but it doesn't look like a dangerous factor for you. Getting this feeling with a wild animal in his real environment is a performance to me. Great shot, Gerhard! I appreciate your note summarizing the global tiger situation.

VERY Very very nice! I love this face - who would not? Post the others too, it will make a beautiful contribution to the felines already in the theme. Love the eye and intent pose.
Lekker naweek

:D
It seems you have just washed this one with shampoo and hairdressed before the shot. Very beautiful capture. Perfect for comercial use with the soft atmosphere. A great shot.

Hi Gerhard,

Brilliant shot, Tigers are my favourite animals but their not the largest, ligers (cross between Tigers and Lions) are a bit bigger than Tigers!
Anyway, great DOF and good sharp details and the blurry background and good composition makes it especially effective!
This I think 100% deserves a favourite!

Extremely well done,

Danny
