[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Of all the great cats, the lion has always held a supreme place in man's esteem and imagination. The lion has always been honoured by man, crediting the beast with attributes he prizes most; nobility, courage, loyalty, combative skills and sexual prowess. The full-grown male, whose magnificent mane ranging in color from a rich golden brown to a deep blackish-brown, mark him as the veritable monarch of the plains. The legacy of the lion, King of Beasts, as the model throughout history is demonstrated by its appearance among the earliest drawings made by humans over 15,000 years ago. The myth of the supernatural powers of the lion survives today; by consuming or wearing parts of a lion it is believed that one can revive lost powers, cure illness, attain courage and win immunity from death.

The genus Panthera Leo are composed of nine subspecies; the Angolan lion, (Panthera leo bleyenberghi) endangered; the Asiatic lion of India's Gir Forest, (Panthera leo persica) endangered; the Masai lion, (Panthera leo massaieus); the Senegalese lion, (Panthera leo senegalensis) endangered; the Transvaal lion, (Panthera leo krugeri) endangered; the Barbary lion, extinct; the Cape lion, (Panthera leo malanochiata) extinct; the Cave lion, (Panthera leo spelaea) extinct; the American lion (Panthera leo atrox) extinct

Yet for all its glory, I believe that the lion is not in the “wild” anymore. They have been downgraded to confinement at Nature Reserves and Zoo’s or processed for canned meat. Does anyone know of a place were Lions still roam outside the protection of Nature Reserves?

As Jaap sad, One needs to read the note to fully apriciate this photo. Without the note the bar seem to be out of place and one finds it distracting. After reading though, your intention is very clear and well shown. I wonder how it would have been if focus was more on the bar rather then on the lion. If the messaged would have been enhanced or if the lion would be to much out of focus...just a though...

At first before I read the note, I did not like the image at all. Now after reading your note, I love it. I must commend you on the ability to use not only the images to create a picture, but to ad amazing substance to it with words. Great combination

A very good note, and a sad, but very well taken, photo. THe beauty of large cats is connected with their wildness, and when they lose their freedom, they lose some of their beauty. But this picture is very good, thanks to the great crop. Wll done, Gerhard.

This is a great shot.
I too at first found the fencing a little distracting but this is a great and thought provoking shot.
The composition and cropping is nice and your note excellent.
Very good work,well done.

The combination of photo and note really makes for a meaningful and thought-provoking posting here, Gerhard. I wish I were able to answer "yes" to your last question but I'm not. The photo is very well cropped and the sad eye behind the fence says it all. Great work.
