Bat-eared Fox
Otocyon megalotis

They are small and jackal-like with slender legs and a sharp-pointed fairly long muzzle. Their ears are very large (14cm) compared to their body. (75-90cm). There are only two worldwide populations. One population is found in Southern Africa, including Namibia, (thanx Rob) Angola, Mozambique and Zambia, and the other in East Africa. Luckily the southern part has expanded considerably during the recent decades. Their distribution is linked with that of the harvester termite – its most important prey.

Usually found in open country such as short scrub, grassland and lightly wooded areas and farm land. Some farmers still shoot this little critter on site.

They are nocturnal and diurnal and largely dependent on disturbance levels and in some areas the time of year. Their activity normally ceases during hot midday sun. They are active diggers and although they dig their own burrows they will frequently modify those of others. Usually found in groups of two to six individuals and will mate for life. When foraging they appear to wander around aimlessly, stopping and turning their ears to the ground when food is located. Then shallow holes are dug with the paws.

Besides harvester termites they will occasionally eat small vertebrates and berries.

It has the cutest face and you are very lucky to stumble upon them at this distance. They are very shy and run off at the slightest sound. I still try to photograph the other termite extinguisher the Aardwolf but have only photographs that are very far off.

Please be honest in your critique and help me to improve this photo.

I hope you like it.

Mooi so Gerhardt. I love these guys. Great note as usual but you forgot to mention Namibia. Still plenty there too.
The image is great. I know how difficult they are to capture well.
I first thought it was a bit too red but I made peace with that after a while. Try it for yourself with a touch less saturation and see what you think.
Kind regards, Rob.

This is a very cute picture, Gerhard
The only nit I can see is the FG as Pam mention.
Otherwise it's a very nice picture with good details, good POV and nice colours.
Very well done, my friend.

Nice composition.
Great DOF.
Well done
:)

Un animal que je ne connais pas très bien mais que je trouve très sympathique sur la photo.

A very nice capture Gerhard and a new one for me too.
I've not seen one of these before.
Composition, detail and lighting are very good.
The pose is nice,he appears to be deep in thought and unaware of your presence.
The foreground is my only nit because the front legs disappear behind it.
Its only a minor thing though.
A great shot,well done.

Hello Gerhard!
Superb capture.I'd never seen it before.Sharpness, details and composition are excellent. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Gerhard

You are right, it does have a very cute face...and those ears! It wouldn't miss hearing anything. No wonder you have trouble getting close.

I like the POV, just a shame the head of this cute critter is not up a tad higher to have a better view of the face.

Lighting is really nice. It has allowed good detail of the furry coat and shows the colours well.

The only nit I personally have is that the foreground is distracting. Other than that it is a lovely crisp, clear shot.

Hi Gerhard,

This is a very strange animal, at least I have never seen it before. The colors are, as always in your photos, very warm and lovely. Details are sharp. I agree with Andy that the FG deserves a point of critique. Somehow it disturbs me a little. At first I though it was the fact it's oof, but after I read Andy's critique I realised it's indeed because the paws disappear behind it. There was not much you could do about that, I assume. Anyway, it's a great photo. He has one big ear and one smaller ear! :) Great note btw. Well done & TFS!

Regards,
Pieter

Hi Gerhard,

A great shot Gerhard. A creature I've never seen before. Excellent detail.
I (personally) find the oof fg quite distracting, but that's just me.
I love those ears!
Thanks for posting.

Hello Gerhard! This reminds me of my chihuahua pups with over-sized ears and a nose job!! ;-)) Excellent composition, details and colors. You handled the difficult light very well also..Very well done!

Hi Gerhard, good shot, I loved the pose, light, details and DOF. I'm agree with Pam about the foreground and seeing the legs and feet would be great IMO. Otherwise a very good capture of this shy cutie with the green surroundings.
Well done.

Ore soos my skoonma! This is a stunning piece of work and I wish it was mine, which would mean that I managed to get close to one. The composition, exposure and detail is excellent (as usual).

What a wonderful looking animal Gerhard,
Great low POV and good sharp details. Exposure is spot on and the lighting is excellent. The OOF FG has been mentioned by a few people, I don't think it would be as distracting had you captured the front legs in full.
Thanks for posting.

What a strange looking chap! It's a very nice image Gerhard. The FG would not be distracting his paws were visible. I don't know what focal length you used here but if you had the spare mms I would have gone for a portrait shot. I don't think there is an unatural orange cast here but I have been well educated by Callie and Japie as to how orange everythign gets!

Well done.

Gerhard,

Hierdie is nog steeds jou normale baie hoë standaard. Die foto is puik! The focus is very sharp, and the lighting brings the 3rd dimension to the fore. I have never even seen on of these. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Wow - what a interesting animal.
This is a excellent Picture. I hope, i can see more about the bat-eared fox. Excellent details & sharpness, perfect composition and great colours. Fantastic work! Well done, Gerhard.

Gerhard. First of all I must tell you that I have my helmet on from a long time ago. Now I am in Defcon 2.
You put really difficult the task of making a severe critic, my friend. With such an interesting and unusual subject and this light and colours. Maybe I can say that stick at the BG is not very arty, but you dont decide that :)
Thanks very much for sharing this excellent images with us and also for your active defense of better critics.

First time ever I see this animal... never even see it in any Documentary shot before. He look weird... a face like the fox and ears like bat! Strange looking animal!

Very well captured, I like the composition, the details, the lighting and the sharpness. Ummm.... If I may said... I would like the see the front soil remove so I can see the whole animal.... but then again, if you move closer, it might just run off. Thanks for sharing my friend, have a great weekend. :)

Awesome capture of this bizarre looking fox! The color of his fur blends beautifully with the red dirt. You are so lucky to live in such a beautiful, wildlife filled place!
