[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I spend a lot of time here on TN and really enjoy the community and consider the people on this site as my “E-Friends”. Spending so much time in photographing nature has not only brought me closer to the two hobbies close to my heart namely photography and nature, but it has also brought my kids closer to these as well. This shot is dedicated to my son Japie aged 3 who found this locust and called me to come and photograph it. I also need to mention that my kids enjoy all your photographs very much as they often sit and view them with me.

Here is more info on my son’s locust namely the Green Milkweed Locust - Phymateus viridipes:

Identification

Large (Body length 70mm), body with green forewings and blue and red hind wings. The pronotum has a raised serated edge tipped with red.

Biology

Like most Phymateus species it raises and rustles its wings, as well as produces and evil smelling foam from the thoracic joints, when alarmed. It flies strongly in swarms of several thousand locusts to migrate long distance sat the end of summer.

Habitat

Grasslands

Taken late afternoon on a pole fence on my property. I used a tripod , cable release and diffused flash to take this shot.

ISO: 100
Aperture: f/22

Merci à votre fils ! Cest insecte est superbe et la couleurs agréables, belle macro bien présentée !
Thanks to your son !

j'aime bien cette capture, notament pour ses belles couleurs et ses yeux bleus qui ressorte superbement sur le jeune.
c'est le fond naturel ou c'est de la retouche ?
merci pour cette belle macros.

Japie
And I must say, the f22 delivers, the tripod, the release. Know thy enemy, the camera, and your friend, the f-stop, tripod shutter release etc, and you can nail the subject most of the time.
A lovely picture of thes mean green feeding machine!

Good shot! I think your son has a lot of potential, since this is really very nicely captured :) I really like the warm colour balance you have from the afternoon sun - was the diffuser warm too? DOF is good, although I get the feeling the middle of the locust was the focus point since there's a marginal loss of sharpness towards the face - although that could easily be my imagination ;) Anyway, excellent work, I hope to see more from your son soon! Very nicely captured :-D

Very nice Japie.
Very good DOF , nice compo and good details.
Your son have a a lot of potential.
Well done.

Nice post Japie & son. Very well presented with good composition and wonderful textures shown. The head side looks a bit soft compared to the rest, but is very slight. Very nice colours. Thanks both of you.

Some of the characteristics of this grasshopper Japie, are almost unreal... its colorful and mainly the one of their eye, its strange formation behind the head and the drawing of their body.
Great capture.
I invite to you to that you read the forum that I have opened recently and wanted if it is possible to know your opinion on the matter.

Perfect clear shot Japie. Colours and DOF are spot on and the cropping/composition is just lovely. Nice job of you son to spot this colourful creature and you did a great job capturing it. Most be the top teamwork.

Very nice insect. I like the red edges. Very colorful. I also have a daughter who is present with me in my "hunting sessies" and take my attention on some subjects.
It is very good thing and i am proud that i am a little part of this society named TN and TE. If each of us makes just one person to love nature, admire and protect her, that will be great.

The DOF goes on forever. Lovely capture of this hopper. The colours are very natural and handled brilliantly. I think this is your best macro shot I've seen. Let the son drive... :)) Masterpiece. 10 points

Japie, keep on calling your kids to be with you when shooting. Send them my best regards.

As for the picture, the insect is a little scaring, what is great on a picture.

Great job by you and you son.
