I just love technology! Here I sit on the plane to CapeTown and have the time to prepare my next post and hopefully some subsequent ones as well (If the stewardess stops asking whether I want something to drink. I was flattered until I saw that she was asking all the other guys on the plane as well – Maybe its her job)

I took this elusive and fast creature in a flowerbed in my garden and assume that he was on the prowl for a bee to feed on. With the Jacaranda trees in full bloom the bees are abundant and he will surely not go hungry!

Here is some more info on Asilidae neolophonotus

Identification

This Wasp Robber fly is medium sized with a wingspan of 15 to 17mm. The build is robust and mostly grey in color. It is hairy and the thorax is often very humped with a median black stripe.

Biology

This Robber fly preys mainly on honey bees. The adults are voracious predators catching their prey mainly in flight, subduing such with their powerful bristly legs.

Habitat

It is widespread and abundant in arid areas with sparse vegetation.

Realmente horrible Japie... el insecto, claro.
Buanc omposicion con la segunda imagen inserta con otra perspectiva.
Buena agudeza y muchos detalles, aunque creo que por la escasa distancia de la captura, el flash todavía disparó muy fuerte.

Really horrible Japie... the insect, of course.
Good composition with the second image inserted with another perspective.
Good sharpness and many details, although I believe that by the shot distance of the capture, flash still shot very strong.

Very detailed photo. I like how you present us with two photos of this insect. Good DOF and great colors.

I like to see this strange aliens. I agree with ricardo about the flash and also yellow saturation, but there are plenty of details. I am glad you did the collage, it looks very nice.

Japie, Well I've read the others comments & they probably aren't far off in their comments. I think that your wood being very light-colored didn't help. Regardless, your details & DOF are very good & I like the comp. The inclusion of the inset left is great. Thanx for your notes on this. Great job!

Nice one Japie, I got one eating a fly but I messed it up with the DOF so bad. :( Nice details. Yes there are some bright spots, but is just a nit. The inset adds a nice touch. Great work. We don't see a lot of them here.

This isn't a picture of the stewardess is it? If so she can get you as many drinks as you want!

Good photo Japie, I love the coloured stripes on the eyes. It's funny, I love Dragonflies and they are predatory but I don't like these chaps at all. The Dragonflies have grace and style whereas these are the hyenas!

Lot's of detail and good focus and DOF. Well done and thanks for making me laugh!

Points tomorrow, as he pours his own drink.

magnifique macro,
