My first and last posting on TN was more than a year ago. Here we go again.....

Photo taken at the Monte Casino Bird Gardens in Johannesburg.

The scarlet ibis is a vivid scarlet bird (50 cm) with a curved bill.

The red ibises live in large groups and fly in V-formation from their roosts to their feeding grounds. Between the normal green color of the landscape they contrast splendidly. The young are brown with a white rump and belly.

The ibises feed in shallow waters along the coast, in the mud flats and in the lagoons. As is known from the zoo, they have to eat a lot of shrimps to retain their color. They sleep in large groups in the mangrove trees along the coast, together with herons.

The ibises breed in young mangroves and if not enough of these trees are found in Suriname, the birds fly away to breed on the coast of Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, French Guiana or Brazil. In Trinidad they are protected as the the national bird of that island.

I found it extremely difficult to get a good shot of these bright red birds. It is easy to completely overexpose the bright colors, and this shot was taken at -1.0 EV.

These Scarlet Ibis are very beautiful. I have them seen them here in Florida, but never this vibrantly coloured.
I like the composition very much with the birds feeding. It's nice and sharp and colourful. Very good job!

I think you did a good job. The details are sharp and the composition is nice. To get rid of the very bright red color, you could have desaturated the picture a little in photoshop. Anyway, well done & TFS!

Great to see another post. I waited a year to see it. ;)

You show great exposure control. I tend to shy away from these situations or underexpose and losing that nice red color you got. The compo works very well given the bunch of birds and makes the main subject stand out. Very well done.

These Ibisses are one of my favourite birds and I hope you don't mind but I have added the photo to my theme.
