Crowned Lapwing (Vanellus coronatus)

General Habits:
Gregarious birds, often in loose flocks of 10-40, occasionally up to 100 immediately after breeding. Non-breeding birds are not usually territorial, moving regularly as grass grows too long, but some defend non-breeding territories in mown grassland. Groups of 2-5 birds (probably family groups) defend feeding territories of 0.6-0.8 ha. Territories defended by vocalisation, threat displays and aerial chases, although few interactions after initial period of establishment. When threatened, calls while bobbing body. Scans for predators 6.7 x/min; vigilance does not decrease with increasing flock size, but inter-bird distances increase. Occasionally makes false-copulations outside breeding season, mounting, but not squatting or copulating; apparently displacement activity. Stands in hunched posture or sits on ground when not foraging. This bird bathes by standing in water up to breast and flapping wings. They roost on ground in slightly elevated areas.

Distribution:
Found from Ethiopia and Somalia south through E Africa to S Angola and S Africa. Found throughout SA, but scarce in western N Cape, Lesotho, former Transkei (E Cape) and parts of Mozambique. They can be found in abundance in Botswana, NW Province, Gauteng and Free State, as well as agricultural lands of W Cape.

Population & Demography:
Very common bird. World population est 0.5 to 1 million birds; population in SA uncertain, but probably at least 100 000. They become at least 8 years old. They are the prey of Eagles, hawks, Goshawks, Falcons and Owls. The Scaly Leg Mite (Knemidokoptes mutans) causes malformed legs and forms nodules on legs, apparently killing birds

Very nice pose and composition. They are breeding now in the park across my home. Lot's of chicks about but I heard a Heron got hold of them over the weekend. I was not there to get the action... #&@%!

I dared a WS to adjust the colors a bit. I hope you don't mind. Please let me know what you think of it.

Hi Henry,
Very good compisition and good details of the bird.
Are you using a reflex/mirror lens? - the background objects suggest that.
