Spiny Rock Lobster

Order:
The decapods or Decapoda are a group of crustaceans including many familiar groups of crustaceans, such as crabs, lobsters and shrimp, but also some families that are less well known.

As their name implies, all decapods have ten legs; these are the last five of the eight pairs of thoracic appendages characteristic of crustaceans. The front three pairs function as mouthparts and are generally referred to as maxillipeds, the remainder being pereiopods. In many decapods, however, one pair of legs has enlarged pincers; the claws are called chelae, so those legs may be called chelipeds. Further appendages are found on the abdomen, with each segment capable of carrying a pair of biramous pleopods, the last of which form part of the tail fan (together with the telson) and are called uropods.

Spiny lobsters, also known as rock lobsters are a family (Palinuridae) of about 45 species of achelate crustaceans, in the Decapoda Reptantia. Spiny lobsters are also called crayfish, sea crayfish, or crawfish (compare crayfish).
Although they superficially resemble true lobsters in terms of overall shape, and having a hard carapace and exoskeleton, the two groups are quite unrelated. Spiny lobsters can be easily distinguished from true lobsters by their very long, thick, spiny antennae, and by their complete lack of claws (chelae); true lobsters have much smaller antennae and claws on the first three pairs of legs, with the first being particularly enlarged. Like true lobsters, however, spiny lobsters are edible and are an economically significant food source; they are the biggest food export of the Bahamas.
Spiny lobsters are found in almost all warm seas, including the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, but are particularly common around Australasia, where they are referred to commonly as crayfish and South Africa. Spiny lobsters tend to live in crevices of rocks and coral reefs, only occasionally venturing out at night to seek snails, clams, crabs, sea urchins or carrion to eat. Sometimes, they migrate en masse, in long files of lobsters across the sea floor. Potential predators may be deterred from eating spiny lobsters by a loud screech made by the antennae of the spiny lobsters rubbing against a smooth part of the exoskeleton.

This photo was taken at the new Aquarium called uShaka. This is one of the best dishes to eat in South Africa.

Hi Gerhard,
An excellent shot! My mouth is starting to drool. I am thinking of a pot of boiling water and a large bowl of drawn butter......Excellent exposure on this shot with the fill flash. Very nice saturated colors. The detail is very sharp. The clarity of the water was excellent here. Very well done my friend. Great supportive notes. What time is dinner???

Hi Gerhard!

I must say that I never ate a lobster :-) I'm not big fan of frutti di mare, but of course I like pictures of them. This one looks great - very detailed and colorfull, I especially like blue stripe on its body. Great underwater post!

Are you sure you used a flash for this one, shooting throu a glass wiht a flash use to be a lot of reflections.

Excellent colour and detail, except for some refelctions in the glass top right. A polfilter will help against reflcetions, though at the cost of precious light (2 f/stop byebye). Great shot!
