Family Calliphoridae / Blowfly

As I mentioned in my notes that accompanied my Tormentor image, I always thought a fly is just a fly, until I started taking photographs and realised there is much more to a fly than the fact that most of us dislike it. I was amazed to see the beautiful metallic colours on most of these insects which I have captured.

I have taken this image quite some time ago, but because it is so very difficult to get the correct identification, it has always been put aside, for maybe next time. Now the time has come that I decided that this fly is just too good-looking to be left in the archives any longer and here it is, still with no positive identification. I think I am correct in saying that it is some kind of blowfly, but to pin-point the exact species is a time consuming and almost impossible task. If I had to wait until I could correctly identity this fly before posting this image, if would never be posted at all. I base my observation that it is a blowfly on the fact that I read that blowflies, are stoutly built with a brilliant metallic blue or green thorax, and that is what I see looking at this fly. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I have taken the following information from one or two snippets from the internet and used a small extract from the guide. Field Guide to Insects of Southern Africa - by Picker, Griffiths and Weaving - Struik Publishers. The order Diptera have been described plenty of times on the site and information is available in abundance. I therefore am not going to repeat all that have already been said just for the sake of it.

I have a variety of more wonderful and most colourful fly photos in the archives, which I plan to share in due course.

Short General Overview
Most blowflies in the family Calliphoridae dine on deceased bodies, and are indispensable agents of decomposition. The familiar "bluebottles" like Cynomyopsis cadaverina and Calliphora vicina, are named for their iridescent blue abdomens. Phaenicia sericata and Lucilia illustris are common, bright metallic "greenbottles."

Although they grow up in rotting flesh, they are competent pollinators of wildflowers. This species, and the secondary screwworm, Cochliomyia macellaria, are important to forensic scientists. Some blowflies appear on the scene of death within minutes, while other species follow later, in a predictable sequence. Time of death can be accurately estimated by establishing which species are present on a corpse, and at what stage of development.

The maggot-like larvae of some species develop inside rotten flesh, carrion and faeces. Others have more unusual larval habits, being associated with termite or ant nests. About 152 species are known from the region.

I hope you enjoyed looking at this photo as much as I took pleasure in taking it.

Hi Anna,
I like how you are thinking as per your excellent note.A fly is a valuable member of our natural world even if we humans are not crazy about them. The colour variety they have is incredible and this photo shows well some of those colours. For the f-stop used you have a good field of depth that shows a great amount of detail especially the fine hairs on the legs of the little creature.A worthwhile photo to have shared and thank you for having done so. Bob

Hello Anna,

Youhave made a fine close-up with very nice colors there is a fine contrast between the insect and the leaf beneath. You have rendered well the metalic shining of the torax.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Hello Anna,
This may just be a fly but it is a very colourful one! Well captured and taken from a fine dorsal POV, this fly macro is sharp and well composed on the leaf BG.
Judging by the space between the eyes this looks like the female of this species of Blow Fly. Females need a more highly developed sense of smell to locate their ovipositing sites and this is why the eyes are more widely spaced apart than those of the male.
Thanks for sharing this beauty,
Have a good weekend,
Kind regards,
Ivan

Hi Anna,

Goed gesien en uitstekend geneem. Die kleure is goed uitgebeeld.
Soos jy ons laat weet is dit 'n raaisel hoekom hulle bestaan maar ons weet dat dit wel vir een of ander gooie doel is.

Hi Anna.
Common flies even so colourful are not my favorite insects. However, pictures of such high quality attract my attention. Details of the insect and leaves are stunning. I also am impressed with exactness and beautifulness of the colours. Patches of light on the fly body are amazing and diagonal structure of the image is very impressive too. My kind wishes and TFS. Superb job.

Ciao Anna,

Hi Anna,
as you know I love shots of insect - and this fly is very pretty. I love the red eyes, the metallic parts - and it's realy special with the yellow body. You catched a pretty one, I like it very much, thanks.
You are right, identification of insects isn't very easy, special flies or dragonflies ...
And every continent is a little different.
I'm so happy to be here in this forum to find help when I'm helpless.
So keep on shooting insects, I like it,
bye and greetings

Hi Anna!

I almost missed this one! This would have been a pity! Your picture already gives the answer to your question: there aren't any "just" creatures in nature. The fly is superb, I have never seen that species before and I'm impressed by the colours. The perfect technical achievement of your picture reveals rich details and highlights the delicateness of the wings at best. I also like the very green support and its fine colour management. Moreover, your picture is so well accompanied by interesting, instructive and educational notes.

Kind regards

Markus

An attracticve fly in a very good setting> Aeal jewel, and you captured it well, with a perfect lighting.
As for the note, well, it is educationnal except... that this is NOT a blow fly (calliphoridae) but rather a close cousin of the House Fly in the family Muscidae...

Very good close up! Have a great day.

Hello Anna,

The fly is beautiful, if you take away our predjudices. You have captured the details of its body with great sharpness. I particularly like the iridescent thorax and the striations on its wings.
The leaf makes a fine b/g with its veins running in an attractive diagonal pattern.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)
Many thanks for your warm comments on 'A colour co-ordinated duck'.

I became fond different unpleasant insects also when I had read a little about them. This fly looks perfectly. Very bautiful colours. A lot of details and the beautiful frame. You write curiously.

Hello Anna !
I understand perfectly what you say about flies - before I got interested in photographys, Ijust thought there was one or two species of flies, annoying little things, no more. Now I know there is much more to them than I thought. Really amazing. And ofcourse you are right, this one is a beauty, I love her colors - yellow, blue, red. It stands out nicely on the vivid green BG. Very well done !

Hi Anna,
wow what a clarity. the red eyes and the deep blue thorax is excellently composed and rendered in rich and dense saturation.
The colours stand out very well against the hraphical lines of the green leaf.
Brilliant presentation.

Dear Anna,
an eye-catcher, powerfully well composed, and concentrated to the essence. I agree with you: flies are a most fascinating order of insects in terms of variety and beauty, still maintaining a widely unexplored part of our biosphere. My own unability to identify most of them has kept me so far from giving flies the attention they deserve.
Well instructing, well written, well entertaining notes, as always from you. Nice saying by Ogden Nash.
Thank you! With best regards,
Peter
