| This photo of wild dogs is the 2nd of my postings of these animals. It is not a brilliant photo in terms of technical aspects, but have posted it as a number of TN members have said they have not seen this animal before, so I want to share info and knowledge on this rare and endangered dog. This pack is part of a breeding programme north of Johannesburg, and they were being given their meal by a very brave keeper who walked amongst them with a big stick - they all howl and make their high pitched whimpering/screeching sound, all the while trying to attack their feeder! The photo is not blurred - it is the dust they kicked up whilst rushing at the keeper. Each dog is uniquely marked and these ones are the more usual darker tones (my previous post showed a light female). It is not possible to tame these dogs and therefore in captivity they are still very dangerous. They have a very close family bond and will support ill, elderly and juvenille members to the end. They are very successful hunters and were viewed in the past (when I was a child) as being cruel and awful creatures because they literally rip their prey apart whilst on the run, but this is how they kill - they do not suffocate their prey - they are very successful and focused hunters. Sadly their reputation meant they were persecuted and killed indiscriminately, hence the endangered status of this species. They do require large territories for hunting and therefore even big reserves only have a limited number of packs. It took me 40 years to see them in the wild! Hope you enjoy this info. |
