Turdoides jardineii, length 9-10 in.

Babblers are a common, resident species in this part of the world (South African Lowveld). They are fairly bold, confiding birds and build neat, cup-shaped nests.

Normally, they prefer riverine bush. They are always in parties of several birds, appearing plain, dusky brown in the field except at close range as in my photo. Then they are very well camouflaged in the dry grass.

They spend much time on the ground, scratching about in search of insects.

At times they are very noisy, the call being an excitable whirring chatter, started by one individual and taken up by all the others until it resembles hysterical giggling, similar to the call of the Redbilled Woodhoopoe, but harsher.

Hallo Ingrid,
Excellent capture of the unknow bird for my, very mimetic and very good captured. Well done. TFS. Ferran.

Hello Ingrid !
The camouflage of this bird it truly amazing ! If it was not for his big yellow eye, it would be almost impossible to see it ! And the picture you have take is impressive - exceptionall quality. Pin sharp details on the face and plumage, very natural colors, and a well-chosen composition leaving some space around the bird so we can see the natural envionment where you have found the bird. Maybe you could have tried a lower POV, but this is not always possible, I know it, and the picture is just fantastic as it is. Very well done !
Valérie.

Hi Ingrid,
I like this strictly brown- gray bird with the orange-yellow eye. Well captured, the composition explains some of the usual surroundings of this birds.
Best regards
Dietrich
