| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
This Tree Orchid (common name) seeded itself in the rough bark of a tree-trunk.
Ansellia is one of the best-known orchids in the Lowveld. It is an apiphyte with its intensly massed roots firmly anchored on branches of trees... The long, slender pseudobulbs bear long, leathery leaves and striking, branched inflorescences. The fragrant yellow flowers are about 25 mm wide and appear in our area in mid winter i.e. August (note date of photo taken.
Ansellia gigantea var.nilotica (common name Leopard Orchid) can only be disginguished when in bloom. The magnificent flowers have bold dark blotches. The flower is also slightly bigger i.e. 30 mm wide. |
