[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The spotted hyena is a fairly common animal throughout most of southern Africa, especially wherever game is plentiful. The hyena is a large , powerfully built animal with a sloping back, broad head and large eyes, but with rather weak hindquarters. The sloping back gives the animal its characteristic loping gait when running. Its short coat is dull grey to buff, entirely patterned with rounded blackish spots except on the throat. Its powerful jaws - this one is cracking a zebraleg - and teeth enable it to crush and swallow the bones of most animals, but not the elephant.
Heyenas are mainly nocturnal animals but are frequently seen during the day, especially in the vicinity of lion or cheetah kills impatiently waiting for their turn at the carcass along with vultures.
It's a very noisy animal; when camping out in the bush at night you'll frequently hear its characteristic, spine-chilling howl which rises quickly to a high-pitched scream. This is only one of the sounds which the spotted hyena emits. Another is the well-known "laugh", though this is generally only produced when the animal finds food or is mating.

Zeno, a clear, concise study of the hyena. And a little quirky too . . . at first it did appear as if the zebra leg was being bitten . . . but it appears it is being licked :)
Well done.
regards,
Sheldon (shel)

Belle prise, il est rare de voir des photo de hyene sur le site, dommage. TFS

Feeding frenzy, glutony, always my favourite sin...
