Waterbuck (Kobus ellipsiprymnus)
Length: 1.3-2.4m
Weight: 50-300kg
Locations: West-, Central-, East- and Southern Africa
One of the heaviest antelopes, the waterbuck has coarse, long, oily hair that ranges in colour from gray to reg-brown. It gets darker with age. It has distinctive white markings on the rump, throat and muzzle, and white "eyebrows". It also has a highly visible white ring on the tail-end, as can be seen in this photo. Horns mainly present in males, making this group likely a group of young males. Males can herd together in groups of 2 to 5 and sometimes more, with hierarchy determined by visual display and horn-length, and freguent fights. Horns can be up to 1m long.
Diet consists of 90% grass, the rest leaves.
Waterbuck loves water and when threatened often dashes for the water, where it swims fast or even submerges with only the nose sticking out
Some technical detail:
Canon EOS 3 with 70-200mm EF lens. Rested on car window with beanbag.
Late afternoon with dappled sunlight.
Film: Fuji Velvia ISO 50\
Scanned with: Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 ED
Critique for any possible improvements very welcome. |
