Broad Scarlet (Crocothemis erythraea)

Average Size +/- 43mm

Description:
Males are heavy bodied, red dragonflies with clear wings. The yellow
Wing spot is over 3mm long. The abdomen is particularly broad and
Has a maximum width of 3mm.Females are pinkish brown in colour
with a greenish stripe running along the thorax between the wings.
Juveniles are often a golden brown colour.

Habitat and Habits:
Occurs near reedy pools or marshes particularly around bulrushes
and sage. Often settles on the ground but is an alert species.

Distribution:
Common in most parts of Africa. It is also found in parts of
Europe and Asia where it overlaps with Crocothemis servillia erythrea
(probably a sub species). Originally described from Monrovia.

Whilst working in my office, or should I say, looking out the window
I noticed a bug fly into a rose bush.
I followed with my camera and to my surprise, the broad scarlet was
right in front of me. I managed 6 shots before he took off.

Very beautiful colours and pose, nicely contrasted, the focus is quite soft but I should have mentioned considering the camera you are working with. You are really putting it to the limit.
