Cape Eland (taurotragus oryx)
Largest of Africa's antelopes:
Shoulder Height Males 1.7met
Females 1.5met
Mass: Males up to 850kg
Females up to 550kg
Both sexes have horns. The males horns are thicker with a heavy spiral. Horns on females tend to be slightly curved or splayed outwards
Predominantly browsers but also partial to fresh sprouting grass.
Calves are born after a gestation period of 271 days.

The shot was taken in the Polokwane Naqture Reserve. The bull was about 80 metres from where I was and he did not hang around very long. I got three shots in. One head on, this one and 1 of his backside. I had to crop a lot off the left and right side as well as above his head as there was a thorn tree branch which I cropped out. With all the resizing, I think the clarity in the shot is not as good as I would liked to have had it.
Nevertheless, I though he was a magnificent animal and hence I posted it.

Hi Willie, it is very soft in focus but I'm glad you posted it as it compliments Japie's picture of the same beast.

Nice informative post, the quality is not good but you said "80 meters?", that camera of your is all road!. Thanks.

Very good Willie.
Great pose and good composition and nice colours.
It's abit soft but we all know that you use a videocam,
so the focus is ok.
Very well done.

I will send you her email address, but I hope he brings his own egret. You got excellent detail at 80 meters with your video camera.

He looks like a big guy.

Well done and thanks for posting

Willie, Seems you have an abundance of these big guys hangin' out where you live! It's a great post!

What a stately looking animal, very good shot Willie, this one is a winner indeed!

This is a prize bull, Willie. We breed Eland and I have never seen such a specimen. Take a look at the neck it's huge! The focus a bit soft. But the change to get a lok at a beast like this... WOW!

very nice, I especially like the tones and the positioning. Well done on taking this before he buggered off.
