I titled this upload 'Ringgat' as this is the name of this animal in every day language in South Africa. I got this info from Robin. Second reason is that the ring backside is very visible here.
They also call it 'Teikengat'. In natural Afrikaans it's called Waterbok. In English: Waterbuck.
It's an adult male photographed along the Shingwedzi river.

I mounted the 1,4 extender here.
Editing: normal workflow.

Thanks for looking...

It's not a Rugrat then??

What a handsome fellow he is - I love his horns Annick. And his ring on his backside.
Well captured

Hi Annick

Great pose with excellent detail throughout. REally showing what you can do with this lense.

James

Hi Annick,

One of these days we will have you talking Afrikaans. Nice pose and detail. Also showing the veld probably around about the time of the first rains which we are desperately waiting for now.

Robin

Cool critter Annick,
It's presenting well, great comp.
Very good detail/DOF, color, and exposure.
I went on African Safari myself, right here in Texas. Had a few hours during the middle of the day to shoot em' from my truck window..Not the best light, but I did what I could. Check out last uploads at my website if you're so inclined :)
Well done!

Hi Annick

A great capture of this sizable and lovely specimen. This one just kicked my appetite into overdrive. Unfortunately Kruger will have to wait until next year, but at least I have images like this to appreciate and remind me to start doing the planning. I can't wait...

Some time back you mentioned you possibly wanted to come out to SA / Kruger again. Any progress on your plans yet?

Take care and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi Annick

Another very nice shot from your South-Africa trip.
I just realized that you have more photos from this location that your own country :)) This really goes to show how incredible it really is!
The capture itself is excellent and it shows this impressive fellow beautifully, with super sharp details.
The angle with it didn't allow you a typical "Annick's shallow DOF" but i think it turned out well like this (even if i can see that you blurred the lower part of the frame a bit...i think i would have been tempted to do so myself) :)
Overall: from such a huge distance, this is a terrific photo!

Bravo and TFS

Hi Annick,
Another excellent shot - this time of this 'Ringgat'. Immaculate sharpness, details and colours and I like the white ring around its tail. Great handling of natural lighting and a perfect DOF. Very nicely composed too. Thanks for sharing this fine image.

Hi Annick,

What an interesting animal! Is that his good side? :) The detail on his body is great. Those horns look very purposeful! I see that you tried to get some of the surrounding grass in focus, as well as the full length of the animal by using f/8. You couldn't really have increased it any more with the 1.4 extender on your 400mm. Perhaps, you could have increased the ISO a bit, provided that you didn't introduce too much noise. In any case, it's a very pleasant shot of a really intriguing animal. TFS.

John
