The hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius), from the Greek ἱπποπόταμος (hippopotamos, hippos meaning "horse" and potamos meaning "river"), often shortened to "hippo", is a large, mostly plant-eating African mammal, one of only two extant species in the family Hippopotamidae (the other being the Pygmy Hippopotamus).

The hippopotamus is semi-aquatic, inhabiting rivers and lakes in sub-Saharan Africa in large groups of up to 40 hippos. During the day they remain cool by staying in the water or mud; reproduction and childbirth both occur in water, where territorial bulls preside over a stretch of river. They emerge at dusk to graze on grass. While hippos rest near each other in territories in the water, grazing is a solitary activity and hippos are not territorial on land.

Hi Annick

Today we are neighbours. Wonderful detail here - the eye is great - rather sinister even. Good exposure on the skin and excellent colour.

James

Hi Annick,
Great skin details, the guy/gal is keeping an eye on you, be careful :)
Was watching a programme on NG TV, they are dangerous animals, guards their territory in water fiercely.

Very nice shot of this Hippo Annick. I like how you've caught him after he has just gotten out of the mud. The detail is very good with excellent texture and colour on that skin. Very nice capture of the eye as he looks around.

Thanks, John

Hi Annick,
hope you kept a safe distance, i've heard these things can be really aggressive...and this one definitely knows you're there! I like the waterline around his massive body and the DOF is perfect, well done and thanks for sharing.

Hello Annick,
Nice eye contact coming from this large muddy Hippopotamus. The fine sharpness show the skin pattern well where there is no mud from this fine POV in the water.
Thanks for sharing this one,
Ivan
