This 'penkop' is a waterbuck.
Penkop is Afrikaans.
It means a young male Impala with small horns which are still in a developing phase.
The young boys who fought with the Boer Commandos against the British Forces who invaded the Transvaal and the Orange Free State during the Anglo-Boer War of 1899 to 1902 were also called penkops. Its literal meaning is "spikehead" and refers to the short bristled style of haircut.
Back to the photo. This is the same animal I posted yesterday.
More info about this specie..wiki
Most of the time I spotted this animal in little groups along the river; sometimes grazing pretty close to crocodiles.
This one is captured during a rainy day. As you can see the coat is a bit wet. Overnight camp was Skukuza.

Thanks for looking...

Hi Annick,

Once again lovely detail in the fur of the animal showing the superior quality of that lens. Well handled exposure and DoF. I will send you some more Afrikaans names for the waterbuck by e mail.

Groete

Robin

Hello Annick!

Great picture of Penkop. I like eye contact, hairy ears and desert colours. Very interesting note. I'm in 'Afrikaans mood' now because I read a book about history of diamond mines and Anglo-Boer Wars. Very interesting lecture.

Stunning detail and exposure Annick. The eye contact from that stare is great, holds you there just looking at him. Who's going to move first. Wonderful shot.

Excellent detail, sharpness of the subject, and pose of this waterbuck. I love the expressiveness in it's gaze and the depth of field is perfectly done among the browns and grays. Shadow and highlights handled superbly.

Hi Annick

This is a real beauty, I can see all the details of the fur and the exposure is perfect. I love the DOF and the framing of the shot. The look captured is relaxed but attentive.

Hi Annick
You've captured a very handsome Waterbuck. I'm surprised by his long, thick coat. I guess it would give protection from insects. This is really a wonderful portrait with him looking right into your lens.
Well done.
