Stick Insects are among the most helpless insects: they cannot fly (with very few exceptions), they cannot jump, they creep slowly about. They feed at night and during the day sit motionless, their wings invisible, resembling sticks. When disturbed, they sham dead.
This one was ca 180 mm. To start, it was quite easy to take photos.
Then it started to struggle, opening slightly the wings.
Eventually - really cross - in this photo, it opened the wings in a Threat-Display and produced loud clicking sounds
like castanettes! |

In Texas we have the "Walking Stick" which is much smaller and spits an irritant that causes an extreme burning sensation in ones eyes...
