The COMMON CORAL TREE is one of the best knwon trees in the Lowveld. It brightens the winter landscape - like so many plants in the Southern Hemisphere - it blossoms in winter after losing all leaves. In spring - for us quite remarkedly - the new leaf buds will appear simultaenously with the fruit.
Every camera toting tourist cannot resist the contrast of scarlet flowers and grey veld.
The tree is generally 6-8m high, with pale yellow-grey bark and sharp hooked prickles on the trunk and branches. The trifoliate leaves have soft leaflets, much smaller than the Broad-leaved Coral Tree, with tapering tips. The inflorescence is appearing June to September.
The tree is widely distributed in the Lowveld and on the foothills and grows in open or scrubby woodland. |

We have a similar tree in north India that goes by the name of Flame of the Forest and blooms in spring time beginning in March and continuing well into April, Ingrid.
These large reddish orage flowers carry a lot of nectar in them and attract hordes of birds and bees in full season.
Your picture of the tree native to your region is quite cheerful and bright with fine delicately coloured flowers.
TFS and regards.

Hello Ingrid,
A fine captureand a good contribution to TN showing the Coral Tree flowers on the practically bare branches that make up the BG with the sky in a pleasing composition.
The sharpness and DOF are good too, emphasing the two main flowers in the FG.
Thanks and best wishes,
Ivan

Bonjour Ingrid,
Très bonne composition valorisant bien le sujet dans un cadrage serré permettant d'apprécier la finesse des détails et la délicatesse des couleurs.
A bientôt sur TN pour de nouvelles aventures.
