Everybody is enamoured with this bird: Alone on the internet 75,100 photos of the Yellowbilled Hornbill - nor can I resist this

smart black and white plumage
unmistakable large yellow bill (from which it gets it’s name)
rapture face expression (when I spoke to it in a low voice)
Italian Opera-like breeding habit (naked female sealed in a hole)


YELLOWBILED HORNBILL Tockus flavirostris

is very common in the Kruger National Park and immediate surrounds, e.g. where we live.
Favouring dry savanna bush and mopane regions, it spends much of it’s time foraging on the ground.

Breeding occurs between the months September through March with a peak in October to November.

A breeding pair locates a natural hole in a tree, which is then lined with dry grass and leaves. The female enters the nest and seals it from inside with material carried to her by the male, leaving a small vertical slit through which she is fed by the male for the duration of her stay in the nest.
During the incubation period she loses all her feathers, which grow back before she leaves the nest.
She then reseals the nest and helps the male feeding the chicks.
NB if the male gets killed during her flightless perid,the female will starve to death.

Also on TN are a lot of photos of this bird, including from me. Very nice expression in this photo. Good sharpness and details. Beautiful natural colours.

Hallo Ingrid,
This is really a god looking bird with beautiful colours and pattern in the plumage.
Not easy with sum and shadow but you managed wll with the exposure.
Maybe a lower POV and another composition with more space infront of the bird had been a bit better.
But it' still a nice picture.

Hi Ingrid. firstly tanks for your kind comments and the chaffinch stays the same colour all year.
Now for your Yellowbilled Hornbill i must say i have never seen one at all. May be one day. You have taken this with fine detail and colours .which help to show the feather markings to their best.And the large yellow bill. well taken TFS.

tolles Portrait von diesem Toko. Raffiniert: er steht im Schatten. Ebenso raffiniert: seine Körpersprache, freundlich, "na, komm schon". Wie beneide ich Dich, dass Du solche Tiere in Deinem Garten findest. Danke auch für die dazugehörige Beschreibung. Ich bin immer wieder erstaunt, was Vögel alles unternehmen, um ihren Nachwuchs zu sichern.

PS: ich danke Dir für den freundlichen Kommentar zu meiner Kritik. Du erwähntest Deinen Besuch in Murten und Dein Interesse an der Schweiz. Melde Dich doch, wenn Du wieder im Lande bist. Ich selber schätze das Land als Eingeborener auch, aber reisen tue ich sehr gern im Ausland :-)
